Default Topps...also 1970

In addition to collecting all the Topps sets, up through 1994 I also tried to collect any test or insert sets Topps put out in each year. I recently made the unexpected addition to my Topps 1970 Booklet set below, an unopened pack. There were a bunch of 1970 extra Topps stuff...Posters, Supers, Candy Lids, Booklets, Scratch Offs ( which differ from the 1971 Scratch Off set only in having white versus red interiors on the inside score card), and then the enigmatic unissued 70 Cloths

Not sure if these first two below are 1970, or issued later.

The 70 Cloth above is my only one, and I owe it to the generosity of Bob, aka Bobsbbcards. It was a never issued set and there are very few examples and a likely incomplete checklist

Great 1970 items, Al.

Do you know if the wrapper and box for the 1971 Supers were the same as for 1970? I've seen some 1970 boxes with a "New Series" sticker on the front that I thought they may have used for 1971.

I love the oddball sets. My favorite includes 64 stand ups, 68 full action sticker panels,69 supers and my favorite has to be the 64 bazooka full stamp panels.

I am in need of a psa 8 Santo and Marichal 69 super.Any help ?

Mike---not sure how to distinguish 70 from 71. The pack with my 70 set has an ad for a camera. The one with my 71 set has an ad for a whale's tooth. I also have this test looking wrapper. Not sure what it is

Thanks Al.

I thought my pack was a 1970 pack but it has the Whale's Tooth ad.

I'll have to try to see a portion of a card showing through the wrapper.

The way to tell the difference between the two years is to remember the fact that whales, prior to 1971, didn't have teeth. I'm glad I could help.

Al, that's a rare pack and a superb pickup! I think the pocket sized game is more 1972-ish just based upon the design but there's not hard evidence on that one. That Super test wrapper is the first I've seen-nice!

1970 was the first year I went ll in on baseball cards-still love the set.

Bob--That is at least easier to understand than the test you posted on CU back in 2004 or 2006.

Apparently the way to tell is not the adds but by identifying what card shows in the pack, although Dave Hornish's blog indicates the white wrapper above was the initial 1970 packaging
