Default Pricing Brown Hindus: Your Estimates

Amid the craze for rare backs and prices, I wonder how others would see fair current price for Brown Hindus for PSA 1-2-3 for commons and SLs. Also, PSA 4 for an average HOFer? Join the fun and guess.

Non-SL Commons

1 = $150-$225
2 = $300+
3 = 450+

SL

1 = $275-325
2 = $450+
3 = ?

As for a HOF 4, it would depend on the player, but a Clarke Hindu 4 just sold in Goodwin for over $1K I believe. Also, Goodwin had 2 SGC 20 SL Hindu that sold for I believe the $450-650 range, so things can go higher than my estimates in major auctions.

Hope this helps, and these are just my predictions from closely watching the market over the past few years. Ah, I remember when I could buy brown hindu very frequently in low grade for under $50 apiece.

They don't really seem to be that rare. I see multiple examples on eBay every week. Maybe a little over valued?

I can only speak to commons...Last year I did a cash/trade deal with a fellow board member for a sharp PSA 5 Leifeld common. The deal was worth about $1k. So I do believe the prices jump once you go beyond a 4.

PS- regarding eBay, it's usually a few lower grade examples, you rarely see any that are mid-grade on there.

Michael,

It is good to see you back in the rare back game. I agree with you about the jump past 3-4, they really seem to take off in Mid-grade and are seldom seem on eBay.

Several PSA 4 commons have sold recently at auction for $900-$1200 with BP. Since it's an early back (1909 only) and pretty tough to find in high grade a decent PSA 5 common would probably run about $2K.

I agree that Brown Hindus are relatively plentiful compared with Broad Leaf 350s and Carolina Brights, for example. The pop reports bear this out. But Brown Hindu seems to be a favorite among many collectors and that leads to a considerable premium above what scarcity alone would justify.

2 pretty nice 5's just sold for approximately $950 and $1200 in Goodwin....just sayin, but does anyone else think $2K for a 5 is high? Granted the Goodwin 5's were both angle cuts, they were very clean, front and back.

Just to add to Scot's point, hindu backs are one of the rarer backs that I seek out and hoard in any condition I can get them. I must have owned over 50 and still have 2 dozen or so. The other one I hoard is Piedmont 42, which I am at about 20 examples right now. I only have approximately 5-6 carolina brights and 5-6 broad leaf 350 for comparison.

Ok Scot, I give up....I guess with limited sales on mid-grade hindu, they can command almost anything.

However, sometimes "grade" doesn't equal "eye appeal"....

Don't usually grade T206, but gave it a shot with some hindus. (bres was graded).

Not sure about prices, but they of course use to be a bit more affordable.

I blundered into a Johnny Evers PSA 4 Hindu about 15 years ago when not many cared (including me), might get okay price now...

Considering paying 520 for a very nice PSA 3 Hindu common, might be a bit high...
