Default Building a Set... Which Way to Cross?

So I have the following mix of PSA & SGC cards, what should I do...

Send all to SGC, PSA or leave them as is... AND WHY?

I say PSA, to me those look brighter in the all clear slab. I hate the crinkly crap in the Young slab though. Nice cards!!

I'd leave it as is. These are rare cards so I doubt there'd be a premium going to either TPG. Unless there's a pinhole that I'm not seeing in the T216 Wagner 2b, I would look into possibly flipping that card to SGC (or cracking out and re-submitting to PSA). That card looks undergraded.

Default cost

Jim,

The crossover cost isn't that much. I'm thinking that I'd like to be able to add them to a registry somewhere as I work on the set.

I've actually got quite a few more that are raw that will need to go to the grader that the others cross over to.

in that case you need to choose SGC.

No need to rush to a decision. Maybe just wait until you go to sell them.

Default wait until i sell?

Rob,

I'm thinking that I'm going to have them displayed on the wall of an office, thus I'd like them all to be displayed in the same holders, it will look much better that way.

A lot of people have voted, but nobody really put much reasoning behind why they voted as they did.

I voted to keep them as is but if you are going to display them I think they would look best in sgc, just can't beat the black border surrounding them.

Default Presentation

I voted for SGC...look at the Young and the Tinker...both low grade and to me that baggie looks awful! Tinker looks quite nice.
(Evers would look much better in the sgc black slab too)

Well the Young Sweeney and Evers would have to be re-cased by PSA if I went that way anyway. Notice the label is their old designation for the set.

The Barry Bescher and Donovan were recently graded by PSA, so I would expect the baggie in the Young to be history if resent to PSA anyway.

Any differences in the registry? Does it make more sense to have them all on one vs the other?

Hi Eric - I voted for SGC because, IMHO, the cards will display much nicer in the SGC holders, especially on an office wall.

I voted leave them alone, and then read your post about displaying them. If you really want to display them in all the same holders the decision would be easy for me. I would go with SGC, if choosing between them and PSA. SGC slabs look better and they are better graders, imo. For those cards I would even say they might be a small bit more valuable in SGC holders than PSA ones.

I voted leave them alone, unless you want to put them in one of the set registries

If most of your set is either graded poor/authentic or raw, would an option be to put them in top loaders so they all look the same? Like Jim R said, then you can put more $ into cards. If they will only be on display and people won't be handling them, the holders don't seem to offer much advantage other than a registry, in which case the question to ask yourself is "which registry is better".

Perhaps you could get them professionally framed with UV protection coating on the glass?

Good luck with your decision, they are beautiful cards you have!

Default imho

leave them as is.
they're in decent protectors and look fine and safe.
i wouldn't put any more money toward the grading companies.
all the best,

crack them and have them framed with uv glass.
If you holder them SGC has a better presentation with the black mattes, but the flips will turn an ugly color under most artificial light. They will be a lot safer under protective glass, something neither PSA nor SGC have in their holders.

If you plan on displaying them in such a manner I vote SGC. To me the the black framed borders look much better and stand out against a wall or on a mantle. Either way, you have some great cards and that SGC 50 Bender is beautiful. Good luck with the set!

Default Thanks to everyone

Thanks to everyone! I have to think about this and make a decision, I've decided that they are definitely not being left as is, they will all go into one of the two (PSA or SGC).

This morning I picked up a T216 Davis SGC 30 as well. If anyone else has a T216 they would sell please let me know.

Default graded holders

Great subject here with results that actually surprised me!
Certainly, I just love cards and I like certain graded holders for certain issues.
Most of my cards that are graded are PSA and the balance SGC.
The clear holder from PSA looks better in most cards I have.
My big issue with graded cards is that i want a holder that fits the card well.
I had a nice E95 Wagner in a PSA holder and the card was floating around.
It bothered me to the point of trading it off for one that fit better!
Have you encountered this situation?

I would leave them as is. If you want to have them all the same tpg for display purposes, then the choice is yours as you are the one who will be looking at them.

Bill - yes PSA used to do this all the time before they had holder of all sizes. I've had people submit these poorly encased cards back to PSA and they will reholder them in a proper fitting case at no charge if you contact them first.
