Great 1918 Sox team pic!!

Continuing the Red Sox theme, here's a program from the 1934 grand re-opening of the "new" Fenway Park, after a major construction overhaul thanks to a fire in the winter of '33-'34.

Haven't posted pickups in awhile -- here are a few from this month --

Items in the group photo that may be hard to see include a McCarthy/Lazzeri Type I photo, Jimmy Archer autograph, a Killebrew 500 HR mug and an early Mike Schmidt pencil.

Also thought I'd post Fred Clarke's original Hall of Fame plaque frame -- I've put a Clarke HOF postcard and M116 in it.

Well, you have a point there. The Chickering coupon would probably be somewhat interesting to the card guys, as Chickering did a lot of late 1800's individual and team baseball cabinets. Thought this coupon might provide some insight into the costs of cabinet photos, but the guys over on this side are pretty much print collectors. In continuation of the theme of posting items that almost no one over here collects, I'll put up a couple of cabinets in a moment

Default 1950s Major League Scouts Business Cards

Here are some major league scout business cards picked up recently. After researching, I believe these originate mid to late 1950's. To me, the team logos are very appealing to the eye.

I did NOT win this 1922 Olympic soccer team sweater - it sold in today's RR auction for around $2,500. I dropped out at $1,600

So nice, though, that I had to post it.

I did win this 1960 Rome Olympics Athletes participant badge. Thought it looked cool and was undervalued.

Thrilled to receive my very first Kreindler work today in the mail! It's a 5x7 study. I can't believe all the detail in the piece. Looks fantastic! I've been admiring his work for years on the board and am thrilled to have one of my own!

Thanks Jeremy. I have a 1910's BAA medal that is the same size and the same medal given to Boston Marathon finishers, so thought they might look good together. I guess I collect them now

I also picked up a Carl Lewis-signed 1996 USA Olympic team singlet. I spent almost every day at the track and field events that summer, so this was an overpriced 'must have'.

Also picked up a rag doll that belonged to FDR's family and 'lived' in the White House with them. Thought it would be an interesting Christmas gift someday for some as-yet-undetermined (or perhaps unborn) family member.

Just got this in the mail today. 1976-77 Saginaw Gears (IHL) Turner Cup Champions Photo Pennant. Can't imagine how few of these are still surviving today. I can't stop looking at it.

Thanks,

Sweet pennant Andy!

Here's a nice pair of early 60's LA pennants I just picked up.

Finally after searching for seven years I obtained my long sought after game one stub from the 1971 NLCS. When I started this project seven years ago my goal was to obtain ticket stubs from all of the post season games played by the 1971 Pirates. I prefer stubs as I want to know that the ticket was at the actual game. Along the way I also added an unused 1971 opening day ticket, a 1971 Pirates Season Pass, a 1971 World Series hospitality Pass, 1971 media passes for the NCLS games at Three Rivers and Candlestick, and World Series Media passes for both Pittsburgh and Baltimore as well as press pins for the Pirates and the Orioles.

There were a few difficult items to find. I only have seen one stub for San Francisco NLCS game one and two stubs for game two. I have no idea why they are such a challenge. The 1971 Season Pass is the only one I have ever seen. The unused opening day ticket is one of a pair I found but unfortunately I could not obtain both. These items were also the most expensive to add to the collection. The only ticket I am still searching for is a stub for September 1, 1971 at Three Rivers. Until I stumble across one the season pass will have to cover that date.

Default 1971 Orioles

Mike,

That is such a cool idea to collect all the stubs along with the other items that coincide with the playoffs and series. I really like this idea, even though I'm an O's fan and we lost this particular series (we should have won!), it makes for such a cool display.

Oh, I don't see any parking passes in there; do you have any for the playoffs or series?

Mark

Thanks Mark and Scott. I didn't consider parking passes. The frustration caused by searching for the NLCS stubs just about did me in. I don't think I could handle such a maddening task for awhile. Those Oriole teams of the mid 60's through 1979 were fun to watch. It would be fun to see yet another Bucs vs. Orioles world series this year. Hopefully if the baseball Gods are smiling the result would be the same as the previous two

I hope both teams make it again. It's been a while since the O's have done much of anything so it's nice to see them compete again after so many years, especially for a die hard O's fan. Yes; Pirates vs. Orioles; maybe we could play "another" seven game series...

If you don't mind me asking.....did you get it for a good price?

Pricewise, pins seem to be all over the place these days.

Hi Rob,

I paid $405 with shipping and am pleased with that hammer price. Not a bargain, but fair considering scarcity and the premium that seems to follow Cubs pieces.

For you, I wish you could have gotten it cheaper.

For the future of my pin collection, I'm glad you didn't.

Just got nice group of vintage Steelers tickets. One of them is a ticket from the first game where they were known as the Steelers (before that they were the Pirates).

I will have this for sale within the next week or two.

Super excited to add this super tough Cub to my collection via ebay

Mike,
Nice addition to the collection! Dates the pin from 1951-1953. Now if you factor in the Kiner "Hearts" pin thats a cost of 200 each Now that I would consider a bargain And remember adding a piece to a collection that brings you joy money sometimes isnt the main reason we do it!!

I hope you are taking them seriously about removing the label. I've heard bad stories.

I like the photos just the way they are with markings and writing on them. Would never mess with one.

I picked both of these up yesterday. The first is my first type 1 photo. I emailed Ben to see if he knew much about the photo such as where it came from or who the other guy next to Ruth may be. He didn't know so if anyone out there has an idea it would appreciate it.

The second thing I ran across was an old wooden Worch cigar box. Don't know if it's the right period as I haven't found another one on the internet yet. Just thought it was cool. Now if I could just find the ball cards.

In case anyone is interested, a very nice member told me he found the uncropped version of this image in the Corbis library dated May 10, 1935. He also seems to remember it being a Van Oeyen. In the larger version, it does appear to be taken in Cleveland so that would fit.

Ben,
Thanks very much for that confirmation.
It's always nice when you get an unexpected surprise.
Even without kids or Lou smiling, I am still pretty psyched about getting it!

Thanks,
Mark

Mark that is a beautiful Van Oeyen Gehrig. On a lesser note... I finally managed to pick up the black version of the 1971 Pirates scroll pennant and a 1960 Bucs eye patch with the original string. The pennant has a few flaws bit I'll take it. I have been looking to add each of these for quite awhile. It's funny how you look for items for a long period of time and suddenly they all appear at once. I'm fortunate to love odd bargain basement Pirate trinkets that require little competition

Love the Pirates pennant and patch!

Picked up two large frames caked in dirt at an estate sale this weekend. When I cleaned them up, I found beautiful wood underneath. Used them to house two of my favorite pennants.
