Default Interesting thing I saw Saturday...............

That uncut S81 silk sure is nice! I have 2 pictures of it in the San Francisco Dec. 13 1990 Goober's Auction Catalog (inside front cover & page 6). It had a preauction estimate of $225,000-$250,000, and it was said to be currently displayed in the HOF (insured for $225,000), and was thought to be a one of a kind piece with the notations along the sheets bottom indicating it may have been a "proof". I dont know what the final auction price was, but from your info it looks like the guy you talked with may have been the guy who put it in this auction. When you described it, I knew I had seen it before, and it took me a 1/2 hour to find it among my old auction catalogs. Frank

I bought a lot of Old Judge cabinets on Saturday and the person I bought them from, at one time, had an UNCUT sheet of S81 silks. He currently only has the life size photo of them but it, in itself, is an incredibly cool item. The sheet itself contained 30 silks. The top 5 silks on the sheet were Generals and there were 5 more rows of 5 baseball players to complete the entire S81 sheet. There were pencilled hash marks at the top and bottom reminiscent of T3 or T206 proofs and there was something written in pencil on the bottom of the sheet in the center. The sheet was bought from a long-time silk collector and sold privately to another collector in the midwest. It would have been incredible to see in person.

The person I got the cabs from had loaned the sheet out to the Hall of Fame in 1993 I believe the date was. For that exhibition and the transportation of the sheet, it had been valued at $225K. Anyway, it was a fantastic site (even the photograph).
