Default E93 Question.

Posted By: benge610

I picked up an E93 Phillippi (Phillippe) today and didn't notice until I got home that the type of the caption is larger when compared to other E93's; in addition, it is slightly uneven when the positioning of the "LL"s are compared to adjacent letters.

Now I understand from Lipset's pedia, that larger captions have been associated with changes made when players moved teams (as in E97); what I don't understand is (following this same theory) why would they "change" his name to an incorrect spelling?

I couldn't come up with a reasonable explanation, maybe you all could.

Thanks,
Ben.

Default E93 Question.

The text on my card is the same way as you described and I always look for this card to see if I can find one with text that does match the other E93s and I haven't found one yet. Actually, the card is still wrong. According to the two reference books I used the correct spelling is "Phillippe".

Same goes for the E98 Mathewson. The text style is VERY different from the rest of the set but I have never seen on with text that does match the rest of the set. This different style of text is found on all 4 colors of the E98 set. The only possible answer I can think of is that E98s include nicknames. Since adding "Christy" in the name makes it quite long, the name became too long for the card and instead of pushing letters closer together they used the condensed type face so they wouldn't need to "squeeze" the name quite so much. Even now it still looks a little "squeezed" in there.

Default E93 Question.

Looks to me like this E93 Leach also shows signs of the larger type; also of Pittsburg. Hmmmm. Pete, could you check your other Pirates to see if there is a team thing going on here. I don't have many E93's to compare to, they are all small lettered and not Pirates. Does this difference in size appear to be random, as in different players with different teams; or limited to Pittsburg fellas?

Inquiring minds with nothing better to do want to know.

Thanks,
Ben.
