Default What did you win in Heritage?

I was very happy to pick up the Tango Eggs Eddie Collins.

What did you think of the prices on the other cards? I was really surprised to see how low the Toleteros cards of Hilton Smith and Leon Day have dropped. Those used to be $3000 cards. But lots of other cards were through the roof in my opinion.

I wildly overpaid for a T206 Speaker, which I didn't need, and was not on the list of 3 cards I was targeting tonight. Oh well. It happens.

Those were my consignments and yes, I was disappointed.

I didn't even bid this time. Believe it or not. Though there were some nice items in the auction, there was nothing there I really had to have, that I even thought might stay in my budget. I was right. Your Eddie Collins Tango Eggs seemed like you got a good deal, but I was most surprised that the Zimmerman nearly doubled the Weaver (even though it is really Tinker) in that issue.

Zimmerman is an unbelievably tough card. Last time it was offered it sold for $2500.
Weaver is relatively easy. Bridwell that was in the big lot of Tango's is extremely tough too. Both lots were steals IMO.

Thanks for this comment, and thanks to Chuck above. Helps ease the buyer's remorse. I've convinced myself I'm going on a Sweet Caporal Factory # back run, if that's even a thing.

I was happy to get outbid on a 1952 Topps almost set lot. Thanks whoever outbid me by 1 bid, I regretted being the high bid and waiting awhile to a point i was sweating it out to get outbid!

It wasn't the Zimmerman that surprised me, but Weaver. Most issues Weaver gets a big premium, even when the pop to other cards in the series is higher. Look at 1911 Zeenut, Weaver is not that hard a card to find, but he demands a huge premium, while the much scarcer Heitmuller large pose gets barely a bump (hi tbob).

I had a quick question about Heritage. I was looking at some of the 19th century cards and noticed the 1887 Old Judge John L. Sullivan. It was graded PSA 1 (much nicer looking but with some paper loss on the back). HA set the estimate at $2K+. That seemed high and I found that a similar card graded SGC 3/40 sold on PWCC last December for $620. Where does Heritage get their estimate? Some of the ones on my watch list sold for less than 60% of the estimate (68 Bench PSA 10). Are they just trying to increase the sale price or do these estimates come from somewhere?

Their estimates are all over the board - I've seen estimates that are 5x what the selling price should be, and the items don't get any bids at all. And then there are items that go 5x what the estimates say, since they low-balled it.

As tempting as it can be (and I certainly look at what their estimates state), try not to pay too much attention to them, and as you did, look for similar recent sales to give you a better ballpark of what to expect to pay.

I was shut out on T206s but not for lack for trying. I managed runner-up on the Speaker Cycle, Clarke Sovereign, Bender SC and WaJo old mill.

"Settled" for the T213 WaJo and E102 Crawford. Nice additions to my player collections

Understand that w600 Plank uniform is tough, but that's Ruth/Cobb money to me... not Eddie Plank.

Heritage said the w600 Plank was the only one ever graded?! If so that isnt a crazy price. I dropped out quite a bit lower than that though! The wagner w600 went for only a little more but has 10 graded specimens.

I got the A17 album and the schlei T3 plus two hockey card lots. One mistake though, they said the A17 was an N43 album but the A17 is N29...no inside pictures to tell. Is there an N43 album?

Speaking of Cobbs, did any board member get the T206 red Cobb blank back? I was on that and the t206 cy young tolstoi 7, which I passed on once it cleared $15k all in. I ended up staying away from extended bidding and I am now pissed at myself for not re-upping on the blank back. Whoever won that, stole it!

Not to my knowledge, at least specific to N43. I believe N29 and N43 are the same checklist. In reality, N43s are a larger format of N29s superimposed on a larger neato background. So, the A17 album, it could be argued, represents both issues. I think Heritage got the description wrong - it was misleading. I did an auction search on N43, saw the item, read the description and decided to pass. I think you got a great deal!

I picked up the Day, which went cheaper than I thought it would. Made up for the absurd price I paid for my other lot. Is the '49-'50 Hilton Smith that was in the auction a 2nd-year issue?

yeah, it was a good price for the A17 album (though i was hoping it was really an N43 one), i guess these are around enough for all who want them so don't get too expensive? the albums are beautiful and really don't go for much money for what they offer. i really enjoy them!

Default 2 Gehrig different prices

You all are way smarter than I am. Any obvious reason the spread on these 2 is so wide? Is it sgc vs psa? Cant be just that.

I don't have a definitive answer for you, but I can see which one has better centering & more eye appeal. I'm afraid it might be "just that." I don't buy cards at this level so my opinion is irrelevant according to those that do.

Default Autograph Pick Up

I know it is stupid; I bought this autograph lot with Mack, Berg, Gomez and a couple others. Just seemed like a good value. What drew me in was the Berg. Do I get it authenticated? Does it come with a Heritage authentication. I kinda took a flyer. Any input would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

1934 Tour of Japan Partial Signed Program & More. Program from a December 9-10, 1934 stop in the Philippines for the fabled 1934 Tour is in pieces and incomplete, but does bear the signatures of the following tourists: Mack, Miller, McNair, Berg and Gomez. Signatures are 8/10 or better. Also on offer are a Good example of Moe Berg's 1940 Play Ball card and a 1994 first day cover commemorating Berg.

Yes, it's just PSA vs. SGC. A PSA 8.5 is probably a very low pop, maybe the only one.

Been there, done that! Paid $150-$200 too much for a '59 Bazooka Banks in an auction about a year ago--hoped I would be outbid, but wasn't. It is, however, my favorite Ernie Banks card, I needed it, and it is one of his tougher issues, being a short print.

I understand, Jeff. But a Rube Waddell in poor, I believe, sold for $12,000 in a Steve Verkman auction several years ago, and I for one would rate Plank well ahead of him in terms of upper to lower HOF'er echelons. What would a W600 Cobb go for now? The last one I am aware of that sold was one in a Goodwin auction, perhaps 7-8 years ago--maybe more, and I believe it went for $35 K. Anyone know of more recent sales (although there aren't going to be many--tough card!)?

Highest regards,

Larry
