1964 Topps Giants - need Koufax, Mays, and a few commons.
1967 Topps - need Mantle and about 40 high numbers, including Seaver.
The Giants I'm looking for NM, the 67s, vg-ex.

Just completed a near mint 1971 set with all keys in PSA 7 holders. What a beast. 20% in on 1957 but finding it hard to find near mint lots as I love to buy, merge, upgrade, and purge. Last weekend I impulse bought complete 1960 and 1965 sets, which I'm going to tear down and rebuild. 1960 set arrived and is mostly sharp but 1965 is going to require a lot of work if I decide to keep it. Last night I bought a 213 near mint lot of 1960s so let the upgrading begin! I love examining the cards and deciding the condition winners and the losers. If I can't decide my wife is the tie breaker.

I have the best wife ever. I received my first Old Judge (Brooklyn, Smith batting) in the mail today from Old Judge (thanks, Old Judge!) and she liked the card so much she said, "Are there more?" Oh, yes dear, there are more. There are more.

Scott....that's a great wife for sure! Yes there are more Old Judge cards but not many wives would encourage going for that set

My own progress is coming along nicely. Just 91 more cards to complete my Topps Run from 1952 through 1980. That excludes the 52 highs that I am not interested in. The bulk of those needed are 67 Topps high numbers. I have all the cards from the 1953-62 years. I also have 1969-1980 done.

I have a few Bowman sets going, but only 1950 is complete.
I have a few prewar sets complete...T205, E95, E96 and E210-1.
I'm working on C46, E90-1, E210-2 , T212-2 and T212-3.
I upgrade occasionally on the prewar, but rarely on the Topps run as I don't mind G/VG or whatever I get to fill the binders.

All this activity has been after I swore off adding more sets. I was going to focus on my pre-war HOF collection which is my favorite portion of this sickness.
I want to acquire all of the HOFers from each of the main prewar sets. Yup, the grandest goal and likely unachievable. Still, I have made nice progress on that too

I sure could use some discipline to keep focused, but it's all good!

Really great projects everyone!

Very impressive devotion....something I lack as I get distracted with other cards I would rather have.

Presently working on a 73 set, with HoFr's graded 7 and above. Made sure to get them out of the way first, and now all I have to work on are commons.

Just over a third of the way done. Love the set!

I always buy the commons first and then the key cards (graded). Based on how pricing is going up it would probably be wise to follow your approach!

Update, I have lowered my number to just 75 cards to finish my version of the Topps run from 1952-1980

I really am disliking high numbers from the decade of the 60's but I "have" to get them I guess.

Regrettably, my overall collection list didn't really get shorter as I added 1953 Bowman color, 1975 Topps Mini and 1947 Tip Top since I wrote earlier in the thread. After I picked up a trio of T3 Turkey Red HOFers, it also made me consider a low grade run on those to go with the handful I already had.

It will never end.

I just bought the Mantle (which I will post on the Mantle thread when it arrives), and last month, Todd gave me a great deal on 29 of the high numbers (including a few of the toughies) I needed, so I'm down to around a dozen commons and the Seaver. I had almost given up on ever finishing this set, but thanks to Todd, I am hopeful that I can put this thing to bed relatively soon, depending on being able to find the cards I need at a decent price.

Thanks David, they look great in those pages. I sure wish one of the manufacturers would make T218/Goudey pages and 51-52 Bowman pages again!

I'm currently collecting a complete Topps base card run of Braves players, starting from 1951. I am currently 95 cards short of reaching my goal. I have everything from 1959 to today, minus 6 Aaron's.

Still 60 cards away from completing my 1958 Topps baseball set, but this week I did finish the cool-looking All Star subset. Seven Hall of Famers in a row, cards 482-488: Banks, Aparicio, Robinson, Williams, Mays, Mantle, Aaron.

Having received #2 Tom Seaver from the 1971 set today - marking the completion of the Kellogg's run - I am checking in on my set building progress.

The Bowman run seems stuck on the final 5 cards in the 1949 set. They include the Big 3 (Robinson, Paige, Snider) but also two other toughies: Preacher Roe and Dave Ferriss.

I have been making great progress on the pre-war front (low to mid-grade):
- 1933 Goudey need 13 (including Lajoie)
- 1934 Goudey need 12
- 1934-36 Diamond Stars need 11
- 1939 Play Ball need 2 (including Williams)
- 1940 Play Ball need 3 (including DiMaggio and Shoeless Joe)
- 1941 Play Ball is complete

I have completed almost every Robert Laughlin related set out there - still seeking the "Erorrs" set and the "Sports Slang" set. PM me if you have a line on either of those.

The hunt continues!

Finished off my '62 baseball and '70 basketball sets and swore I'd take a break from serious set chasing. But that didn't work out.

At the local hotel show last month I came across a nice 1961 starter lot in a binder for under 60 cents a card. Added a really cheap lot via eBay (nice condition for the price!) and find myself about 60% through with it already. A bit less than that for the higher cost star cards.

My other set builds have taken a back seat and are creeping along.

Finally finished off my 1967 Topps set with the addition of a beautiful Rocky Colavito high number. Now I will await the next ebay 15% coupon to try to knock off the last couple of 1957's I need.

Haven't checked back in on this thread in a long time. Funny to see the progress since my last post. I have completed the 1933 Goudey except for the second Gehrig and the Lajoie. 1934 Goudey is done except for Greenberg. Diamond Stars is done except for 3 high numbers (99/105/108). I have the Play Balls except the 39 Williams, 40 Dimaggio and 40 Shoeless Joe. I consider all these "done" - except for the Diamond Stars - as the remaining cards are too darned expensive.

In the mean time, I started collecting variations. For example, I have all but 3 of the 1958 "yellow letters", the entire 62 green tint set, and all but 1 of the 69 "white letters". I have also picked up the other standard variations across the mainstream post-war sets with a couple of exceptions like the 55 Bowman Kuenn (name spelled correctly); the 58 Loes (no trade) and the 67 Topps Gomez and Belinsky stat line misprints.

I have also started in on some of the older small sets like the 1948 Swell Sports Thrills, 1951/1952 Berk Ross, 1952 Wheaties, 1960 Leaf (need 4), and 1968 Milton Bradley. And some of the less popular inserts from the 1960's like the 1965 Transfers and 1966 Rub-Offs. And working on, but not expecting to complete, the 1962 and 1963 Jello sets. Its interesting to see how much variation there was in the population across these sets, which are not reflected very well if at all in Beckett pricing.

PM me if you have any of the things I have mentioned here and are interested in selling/trading. As always, happy hunting to all my fellow set collectors!

Wow, my thread from way back is still alive. I dropped out of the card world for a bit there (classic car collecting kills card budgets...lol), but I AM BACK. Excited to be back as well. I sold all my sets 1967 and older (turned them into a completely restored 1963 Ford Falcon Sprint to add to that collection), and kept my 1968 to 1990 Topps sets. Currently working on 66 and 67 at the same time and just made some purchases to get me going (jumped right back into the deep end of the 60's pool..lol). So happy to be back, I missed it terribly. I can say though taking the break I did has really re-kindled my love of the hobby. Looking forward to joining back into the fray...right in time for spring training.

Thanks all!

John

Currently working on 66 and 67 at the same time and just made some purchases to get me going (jumped right back into the deep end of the 60's pool..lol). So happy to be back, I missed it terribly. I can say though taking the break I did has really re-kindled my love of the hobby. Looking forward to joining back into the fray...right in time for spring training.

Thanks all!

Robert - in the spirit of you and I changing our minds on things every few weeks - wanted to let you know I'm reconsidering doing sets again. Bottom line, I think I need to find a way to be happy, to find the value in common cards. Because after this last month or so, if there is one thing I have learned - it's that I can't really afford myself or my hobby if I continue to only go down the road I have been.

Welcome back to the set builder side, John! I have tried to escape but just can't do it. It's just too much fun!
