Default Fishy 1957 Topps Gene Bakep

Our old friend toppsaholic has listed a 1957 Topps Gene Bakep for $585 on eBay, but something isn't right about it. Can anyone who is familiar with bonafide 1957 Gene Bakep cards spot a couple of things missing?

The second "e" in Eugene and the "W" are complete.

So it appears doctored?

Every copy I have ever seen of this card (seems like a lot), all have some red ink that bleeds into the right side of the card number's baseball. The amounts vary, but on all I have seen have some sort of red into the baseball. This shift of red is likely the cause of this variation anyway.....of course he could have the rarest version, the only no red in ball but partial "R".

Just like the 57 Buhl card only on copies were red is into the baseball is the "R." in Robert "R." Buhl missing the top part of the R.

Very fishy.

Here is an image of the Buhl card, just like with the Bakep, I have not seen any copies of the Buhl with the partial "R" middle initial without red in the ball.

I know nothing about that card. I do know Mathew(toppsaholic) sells a a LOT of altered garbage. Too bad his good friend the purple sticker guy doesn't help him spot the altered cards.

Maybe one of his many IDs on here will come stick up for himself.

Default Reds

The reds don't match, always thought this was an easy card for someone to touch up with red to fool someone ....

Correct! All of the other flaws are mentioned above, the last E in Eugene and the W are always also affected, and the red ink always goes into the baseball. Unless his is a one time print freak it is almost certainly a doctored card where someone used a red marker to turn the R into a P, also mentioned above.

Seriously, all you have to do is zoom in on the card in question to see it clearly was altered.

Owned over 20 Baker errors none looked liked that. They do come in varying degrees of bleed but that just doesn’t look right at all.
