IYHO, what 10 "common" commons + one HOFer + one horizontal +/- one "uncommon" common would give a beginner T206 collector the best sampling of the Monster?

10 "common" commons:

I would go with 5 game poses, like:

Doolan Fielding
Oberlin
Doyle Throwing
Herzog Boston
Snodgrass Catching (or Needham)

...and 5 portraits, like:

Abstein
Beaumont
Lobert
Killian
Weimer

One HOFer:

Jennings One Hand Showing (Great shot and affordable, too!)

One horizontal

Mullin

One "uncommon" common

Dahlen Brooklyn

But before I picked up a horizontal or uncommon common, I'd pick up a Southern Leaguer -- like Bastian or Shaughnessy.

These would give you a beautiful array of affordable T206 cards that would represent a strong initial collection well.

"Uncommon" common:

-Chase, white cap (gotta have Chase in this group)

Horizontle pose:

-pick the one you like the most on visual appeal, but personally I would replace this choice with a Southern leaguer...say Hub Perdue (played in majors also)

"Common" commons:

-5 portraits in five colors of five good (arguably) players
1 Leach (yellow)
2 Kling (red)
3 Lobert (green)
4 Dougherty (lavender)
5 Jordan (blue)

-5 poses of five good (arguably) players that are visually appealing
1 Merkle
2 Phillipe
3 Cravath (minor leage representative)
4 Powers
5 Reulbach (chicago on front)

you can get a varied representation by concentrating on a team. Most will have a good mix of common, uncommon, portraits and actions and will include a Hofer. And, provided you don't select Detroit or Pittsburg as your team, should have a completion point that will make it all the more rewarding. To this I too would add a Southern Leaguer.

I think two cards that have to be thrown into the mix:

Pattee - for a horizontal pose
Leifield Pitching - just a great looking card

The one HOFer I would suggest that is still fairly affordable is tris speaker. just a great pose of him batting against that deep blue background.

The above posts are on track. Add a southern league player in there for certain.

One thing I used to have fun with about 15 years ago was trying to anticipate and by cards of Hall of Famers BEFORE they got in... Davis was a good example, I bought his card about 3 months before he was selected. There were others. Toward that end I'd suggest buying the Ed Reulbach card from the 150 series that has Cubs on the front and his glove showing. It's a great card, and may well be a bit underpriced. He is a marginal for the hall of fame. But since Kirby P and Gary C got in, Ed Reulbach should easily get in... he is much more deserving that those 2.

I'd suggest getting the Kling portrait card. It is a bit more difficult to locate than the guides and market prices would suggest, in my opinion.

A variety of backs would be nice, different series and different brands. I'd suggest at least one American Beauty card. They are about 1/16th of an inch narrower, because the cigarette packages they came in were narrower, because the cigarettes themselves were more slender. After you look at a bunch of T206 fronts, one after another, you get to a point where you can point out American Beauty cards without flipping them over.

If you start this, you won't be able to stop at 10 cards... 'tis addicting.

I am kind of surprised that many of the listed "common" commons are actually on the "uncommon" common list.

Here's mine:

Horizontal, Murphy, nice color, easiest of the horizontal.
