.....Approximate date 1880s? Could it be early 1890s? Size is approx. 2 1/2" x 3 1/2"

Yeah that's a neat picture! I'm curious as to what others think but I'd go with 1880s or perhaps a bit earlier.

one of the players is holding a spalding thyer type catchers mask which would put this as early as 1878

No idea. This piece did come from a renowned collection (Mark Rucker) but I have no idea where it originated.

I agree with 1880's, but please keep in mind that catcher's masks weren't thrown away the same year they were purchased.
