Justin - the la84 archive is great for research - you can actually see when the different series of Sporting Life's were issued and how many series there were (more then just what you have there). It's also fun just to read through some of the old articles - I found one several months ago that referenced Shoeless Joe (using his nickname) while he was still in the minors.

Hmm, this is the ad that's got me curious:

http://www.la84foundation.org/SportsLibrary/SportingLife/1912/VOL_59_NO_19/SL5919002.pdf

It's from 1912 during the season and is an ad for Series 80 through 89?

Could alternate backs correspond with these later series?

Rob - not to jump the gun, but the M116 article Tim Newcomb has been working on should answer your question and more.

Lyman has sent (or is about to send) the issue to the printer, so the long-awaited M116 article will be in the hands of subscribers soon. I think I've made sense of most of the set's puzzles, although some remain for others to pursue!

While I'm on the subject, let me urge anyone who isn't subscribing to Old Cardboard to plunk down their $19.95 for a year-- you will not regret it if you like old cards!

And also let me thank the many collectors who helped with the article during the several years of its gestation. I'm not going to be able to list everyone, but I should mention Alan Sassoon, Brian Parker, Bruce Babcock, Dan McKee, Ted Z., Dave McDonald, Matt Goebel, Scott Mosley, Kenny Cole, Dennis O'Brien, Bill Latzko, Bob Richardson, Brian McQueen, John Esch, Tony Galovich, and Andy Cook. Matt Wieder was a huge help and encouragement over the past year.

I also owe special thanks to those hobby savants Richard Masson, Scott Brockelman, and -- of course -- Mike Peich. Last but not least, thanks to my buddy TBob Marquette who helped to get me excited about the set a long time ago, and got rolling on a lot of the information that you'll see there.

Hope you guys enjoy the article!

Tim
