This was a cool card that just sold on ebay, .a 1928 R315 Babe Ruth PSA 7

Can anyone provide info on this issue? Who produced it, how tough is it? I see the specs on oldcardboard.com, but there isn't a checklist.

R315's are found in the 2006 SCD page 319.

They are similar to Exhibit cards but the stock is thinner. Postcard sized anonymous cards issued from 1929-30. 46 in the set.

Not rare at all.

Were they issued with any products (like gum)?

I was watching those auctions myself - sharp looking cards. But the set concerns me a little because of the different cuts/colors/paper stock/sizes I've found on some of the cards.

In the past couple of years I've monitored the Roger Hornsby. The card comes with several variations (fakes?). Here are just a few...

White w/ caption and no cross on face:

White w/ no caption and cross on face:

Yellow w/ caption and cross on face:

Are these all real?

It's well known that these came in 4 different print variations. I think all are real Mark...but I too don't like the way they were hand cut? The first ones I ever got, and still have, I questioned big time. The seller exuded confidence that they were good and I kept them. Very miscut though....(at least mine are)....

edited for stupid spelling

Thanks for the checklist.

Mark - what is that cross? The scan almost looks like they are creases, but I know they aren't. Are they faint white lines on the card?

There likely were scratches on the printing plate, but as there were 4 different printings, it appears that some were printed before the scratch. Similarly, there was a large, almost thumb-print like blotch smack in the middle of the Dazzy Vance card, although I'm happy to say that I landed the PSA 9 Vance tonight that somehow lacks that blotch--the first in the 35-40 Vance's I've seen that was "clean".

nice pickup. Looks like an affordable set even in NM-MT to MINT condition. Well, at least compared to other sets in the same era.

but the set does have a Lefty O'Doul rookie card (if you don't count several Zeenuts). I have a few. Not bad items but cuts are all over the place.
