Default Trying to decide which Joe Jackson card to buy: Please help!

Hi everyone,
After looking through the thread I started a couple of days ago and being inspired by all of the amazing cards posted there, I've decided I want to add a true cornerstone to my collection.
I am mostly a set collector, but I have always wanted a Joe Jackson card. My favorite is the CJ, but I think that will have to wait a few years.
I also really like the M101 and Collins-McCarthy/Boston Store cards. I don't really know much about these issues. I know that the same card front can be found with a number of different backs, but I don't know how many, or which backs command a premium, etc.
I'm hoping to spend in the neighborhood of $2,000. Please help me decide what I should be going after! Thanks in advance

I forgot to mention that cards issued after 1919 don't interest me much. Also, not really interested in strip cards.

With a $2,000 budget for a playing era Shoeless Joe, you are looking at one of the game cards (Tom Barker, National Game, Polo Grounds) or the W514 strip card. Since the OP mentioned not wanting a strip card (and they are mostly hideous), it seems like the only real option in that price range is one of the game cards.

Really nice, relatively inexpensive Jackson cards are the 1913 National Game/Tom Barker cards (same image for either). In my opinion it is one of his more attractive cards, with a real pleasing posed black and white photo, and a card that should be around half of your budget amount (more dough to buy other cards...always my mantra).

A really nice B18 blanket can be fetched for half your budget. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I prefer it to the strips and game cards.

Pretty sure someone had a real nice T Barker or Nat Game card on the B/S/T about 4 to 6 weeks back for around 1200 or so. Think it might have been a SGC graded card in very nice shape and a beautiful image of Joe. Found it, Nat Game SGC 84 for sale on 3/08 by Square5000. Nice card and well in your budget bro. Good Luck from another Jax/black sox fan.

2k can maybe purchase a corner of an e90-1. A dinged corner at that

I think the Playball or the strip are nice choices within reach of the stated budget.

Great choice getting a card of Shoeless. I am a huge fan of his cards, his feats on the field, and fascinated by his story. He is a true icon in the sport and hobby

Thanks for the advice guys. Looks like I may have to raise the budget.

What would a similar m101 to this run in a nice 1 or 2? (just a ballpark)

I think what the op meant to say was: "Is there a cheap enough M101 back to get a Jackson for 2 grand?"

Lol. Yeah I guess I was hoping that would be an option at that price. I really just don't know price ranges for this stuff, so I appreciate any and all help.

Default a few choices

The game cards are nice and a great value. An M101-4/5 might be in sight. I think you could get a pretty nice one in the 2500 range if you are patient. One with a scarce back would be a little more.

Thanks everyone. Those game cards are pretty cool. I'll just have to keep my eyes out for one that I can afford.

Here is something odd-ball, but some folks like pennants

or even look at this example:
1919-21 W514

**These are NOT mine, they are currently listed in a AH for sale,

Not sure if a team card is what you're after or not, but a T200 might be an option for you.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

Cheers,

Richard.

Default Joe Jackson Card

There is a T202 Tannehill & Lord "Lord Catches His Man" available on eBay right now. Since the center panel has been confirmed to be Joe Jackson sliding into base it is definitely a legit baseball card of Jackson in his playing days. It does have some back scuffing, but looks very sharp on front . . .

Default Check card target for m101s

I've tracked about 70 sales of the JoeJax card in m101-4/m101-5, and am sorry to report that you will not likely find an unaltered example for less than $2K. The only one with an ad back that meets that level is this SGC 10 Indy Brewing card, which sold for $1320 and, as you can see, is well handled.

One blank back meets your price, barely. This one has obvious back damage, but since it's supposed to be blank anyway (I think) you could maybe get one of these, which sold for 1997.50 in last year's REA:

Otherwise, there are a few graded "A" that might work, including this one that sold for only $900 six years ago in Mastro:

Good luck.

That SGC 10 looks like a great buy. I personally love a presentable front with back damage, especially when there are no stats or biographical info on the back.

I went with a game card, mostly because the image of his face is so small on the M101 cards that in person I couldn't even see it.

I think based on what you have sad the only choices are the game cards and the M101 like everyone has already stated. It is pretty hard to find any Jackson card under $2,000 even the playball sell for good money. Based on your budget go for a game card or raise a bit more and you can likely get an m101 in the 3K range in good or so.

Obviously the E90 and Cracker Jack are viewed as his major cards but I think the buy in price is at least 6K for either card at this point.

Good luck and let us know what you get.
