January 2012 Pick-Up Thread...

Well, I just got home from a crazy night at work. Hope everyone had a fun and safe New Years Eve. My new year of collecting starts off the same way 2011 did, with a TYPE 1 photograph of the Iron Horse. This one is from 1932.

I love this bat! It came from Pennsylvania. It's approximately 6ft tall, solid, and retains it's original appearance and finish. I've only seen one other that was smaller. I had assumed this was a storefront sign displayed in front of a sporting goods store. After I had bought it the guy said it came from a baseball bat factory and had been displayed there. As you can see it was displayed from the handle end hanging down. I won't alter the originality of the piece one bit like drilling holes, etc but I want to display the bat horizontally with some old leather straps.

I was lucky enough to obtain this vintage photo today at a local New Years Day auction and it is of a team from Freeport, Illinois near where I live. It measures 13X12.5 in size. There are several names written on the backside but no one of importance that I see and also no date. I am wanting to know if anyone can pin down the approximate time-frame this might have been taken given the types of uniforms/equipment/etc. displayed in the picture and what the present day value might be given it is only a local team with no major leaguers that I know of shown in the photograph. Thanks for any help or comments.

Michael/Ruth-Gehrig, Congrats on that bat....muat have been a tall porch to hang it vertical...I agree with the leather straps or what ever to hang it...you're going the right way to not alter it from it's original state, if possible.

I saw another similar one last May at Brimfield which I addressed in the story I wrote. See link to it above, which has multiple photos...Mat, whoa that's a big'un...I shoulda known you'd have one being the folk art guy you are.

In other news...went to the monthly Alameda show today...got there late...basically just looking for eBay fodder...found a big'ol Americana engraving titled "Distinguished Americans - In a meeting of the New York Historical society" c1854 for $25.00 including the huge plastic sleeve...in poor condition with stains and tears, and trimmed...typical lotta band for the buck/won't make jack on eBay find...A nice copy runs about $1,400.00...lucky if it breaks $50.00 on eBay...why do I get invloved?

Half way thru the show I spotted two big blow up photos, one of Ruth the other Gerhig...guy said he just sold them...had been asking $75.00 each all day...sold them for $40.00 each...looked like maybe from the 60's-70's so at least they had a little age...the Gerhig one was what caught my attention....never seen that shot before...

Yet another killer piece Brock! This megaphone and your Home Run Derby Hat are my favorites.

Also, this Williams megaphone would go perfect with my TYPE 1 photo.

. . . had to wait an extra week or two to receive this team signed ball, on account of the seller shipped it to the wrong person. But after a flurry (I'm in Michigan, after all) of emails, this ball is now happily in my hands.

Nothing special about the 1944 team, other than it's a war-time era signed ball, and that the ball it is still quite white in color (which I don't encounter too often for this period). I don't generally collect team signed baseballs of this era, on account of the signatures often appear much bolder in the listings than they actually are (IMHO). But for the right price, I'll bite. The price was right on this one, and will be a much appreciated addition to my collection.

I haven't posted a pickup in awhile but this beauty arrived today. It looks nice in my office at work. The sharpness and detail is great in person. Thanks to Steve for the deal on it.

Jarrod - sounds like you just got it and put it right up on display. Can't blame you with that great shot, especially with my favorite Dodger in the front of the line!

I've not yet obtained a slabbed photo myself in part because I've always wondered how to display them while avoiding the garish (to my thinking) TPA info. Out of curiosity, what, if anything do you do to hide the labeling info? (I assume it was relatively simple since you displayed it so quickly!)

Thanks, jt39! It's propped up in the corner of my top shelf with the PSA label hidden behind a signed photo of Stan Musial in a frame. Not a perfect solution, and I may unslab it and get a real frame for it in the future. The PSA slabs are basically a toploader that's sealed. I like to buy photos slabbed as I know I'm getting a true Type I (hopefully!) but on those I'm sure I won't resell, I don't mind busting them out for display purposes. I will usually keep the PSA or Beckett label though and tape it to the back of the frame.

I'm waiting for a client to come in and say something about it. I'd be thrilled if they recognized Furillo or Hodges especially.

I've not tried it myself, but my understanding is the intent of the thin PSA photo "slabs" was that they were thin enough that they could be framed. My thinking would be to cut a piece of mat board with a hole just large enough to accept the holder without shifting around, then cut another mat to lay on top with an opening to frame in the portion of the photo to be displayed. The top mat would have to make a wide border to hide the edges of the slab and label, and the frame would have to be sized several inches larger than the photo itself, but that should work. The Beckett slabs would be a bit more difficult, and to my thinking would always have a "shadow box" kind of feel due to the way the photo sits in the slab.
