Default help! post purchase anxiety: was this a good deal?

Posted By: Ben

I sort of bid a large amount on a whim on this caramel wagner...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31719&item=1975458997&rd=1

didn't think I'd ACTUALLY win the card since I placed my bid with around a minute left! I'm used to being outsniped at the last second anyways. Now I'm wondering if I should have bid without thinking much of it beforehand...

How did I make out on this one guys???

two earlier bidders almost equalled what you paid, and the rest weren't too far behind.

Don't worry Ben, you did fine. How can you complain about a Wagner for under $200, in any condition?

ANY "E" Wagner that isn't ripped in two or missing a corner for under $200 is a good purchase.

Even tho Matty's picture isn't on it.

But, the real answer to your question is the answer to this one:

Would you rather have the card, or the $190?

Knowing you, I bet you'd rather have the card.

And, that's all that really matters, Bro.

I pretty much knew it was a good deal, I just needed someone else to tell me that

I saw the same card with a ton of creases and a missing corner go a few months back for around $150. The card books for $1250 only, but when it's Honus, book value is almost irrelevant...

And Dan, Matty IS part of this card...Honus is just about to crank one of his 'fadaway' pitches into the bleachers

i say you did fine.

i don't think he's hitting a homer off of Christy, though -- in 1910, for instance, Honus hit all of 4 HRs, and Christy gave up exactly 5. I'm not up for going through all of the box scores, but odds are their paths didn't intersect in this way...

that isn't to say he wasn't cranking a double into the gap...THAT I would believe...

Matty was pitching. And, Wagner's hit did go into the bleachers...behind him. It was in Polo Grounds, and the "bleachers" were behind the fair ball lines. Everyone in the outfield there had to stand in the grass to watch the game.

But, you had to give Wagner credit for being brave enough to even swing at one of Christy's pitches, even if it was a foul ball... <grin>

Crowd of 12,466 was the largest to date to see a Pittsburg game. The Giants were one game behing the Pirates.

"...with Zimmer at first and Wagner at third, the two tried a double steal. Zimmer broke for second, but Matty stretched up, picked off the throw, and fired home to nail Wagner easily at the plate. The Giants scored three times in the 12th, but the Pirates responded. With two outs, Wagner was at second after driving in a run and Ritchey was perched on first. When Wagner broke for third, the rattled Mathewson committed a balk. With the tying runs in scoring position, Matty struck out Ely to end the game and move the Giants back into a first-place tie with Pittsburg."

I've seen Wagners like this one selling for twice the price.

In my view, the sleeper Wagner card is the 1936 National Chicle fine pen. You can find these in excellent condition for around $50. They show Wagner on the field as a coach. That set has quite a few really nice cards in it that are surprisingly affordable, like the McGraw and Mack together playing that game where you reach up a bat successively. There are also some really nice action shots.
