Both cards are E93 Lajoies, one a very nice SGC 50 with a slight diamond cut (although there appears to be staining on the 50, there is none visable - it was caused by the scan), the other, an SGC 60 with a slight stain in the upper right corner?

I'd keep the Nagy card. It looks "brighter" to me and it's pedigreed from one of the all time great collections.

The 60 has a more vivid image and I personally like the pedigree cards when they are of someone significant to the hobby.

both look identical to me...the 60 seems to be a lil more oc. is 1k worth it for a marginally better card with some pedigree? i'd keep the 50.

Quan,

Ive been wrestling with this decision for a while now and I generally agree with you. Would the slight scuff (some would call it paperloss ) at the number 14 and the staining on the back change your opinion? I think the back is the primary reason the card did not grade higher. The back of the 60 is completely clean.

i think you're asking the wrong guy...because a lil staining is fine to me (esp the back) as it reminds me where these cards have been. The 50 is a high end 4 because of the scuff...i'd take that over 4 rounding corners any day. Personally I think the OC on the 60 is more distracting than the back of the 50.

I tend to downgrade, but I think I'd keep the 60. The image is a bit crisper and the cut is aligned - plus I'm not really crazy about scuffs over print, even one that tiny, on cards in VG/EX slabs. That tiny amount of missing text doesn't really bother me in and of itself, but a third-party grade can skew one's perception of the card.

Everyone has their own preference on what bothers them most about a card with a flaw.
Paper loss, being off-center, staining, etc.
Mine is definitely paper loss. I'm a stickler on it. Although its just a light abrasion
on the 50, it would force me to lean towards the 60.
I too am in agreement with Quan in regards to light caramel or tobacco Staining on cards.
It doesn't bug me a bit. It reminds me of where these cards came from. Adds character.
Both are beauties.

Tony

Centering is an important issue with me, so I'd go with the 50.

There's an appeal to owning a Nagy, and the brightness is nice, while centering is distracting.

But if you don't have any desire to re-sell, you could just keep the lower grade one with the better centering and send it to Kevin for some cleaning...

If I were you would keep the 60. I think the diamond cut on the 50 is equal to the centering on the 60 and wow is that Nagy card bright and clean. Of course, if they were my cards, I would sell the 60 for big bucks and buy more cards.

I'd go with the 60. While the staining doesn't bother me, I think the 60 looks brighter, and has nicer eye appeal.

I personally think it's strange that owning a card from someone like Nagy or Carter gives a card a premium. Provenance is nice, but attaching celebrity to a baseball card collector is slightly bizarre. However, that celebrity should pay off for you. I would stick with the SGC 50. Much nicer looking card IMHO

And give me the other one since the Lajoie is one of the last HOFers I need for the set. I can give you my address if you need it

They're both very nice, but the tilt on the 50 is more distracting to me than the centering on the 60. The 60 is brighter and has great provenance. I'd go with the 60.

If money is an issue, the 60 strikes me as only marginally nicer and probably not worth the incremental difference.

Peter,

Depending what happens with some other cards Im looking at, the money could end up being the deciding factor - right now, its a minor consideration.

If money is a factor keep the 50...if not, the 60. That is a personal decision as I do like the provenance from Hobby Pioneers. I wouldn't buy something specifically because it came from the "Leon Luckey Collection" but I would pay a few bucks more if I knew something came from one of these early collections.....certainly a personal thing though...A lot of folks see it differently and that is fine too......good luck on whichever way you go....best regards

Leon, you shouldn't have to pay more for something that is already in your own collection...although I would like to try and re-sell you your Peck & Snyder!

Tbob,
that's kinda harsh, agreeing with Leon that you wouldn't pay any premium to something coming from the Luckey Collection. ouch!

I'd keep the 50...if it truly presents as cleanly on the front as the 60. Almost exactly the same corners (amazing really when you look at them side by side!), but I prefer the lighter black levels of the 50 so that a more natural flesh tone is aparent and more detail can be seen such as the brim edge of the hat.
One thing really interesting to note, is that looking at the tilt of the image on both right borders there is not a huge difference in angle, and yet by the time you get to the right side the difference is enormous....weird..

Daniel

If for a collection, I'd keep that one, hold the 50 for a year and the way things are going, sell the 50 for what I paid for both.

I also think the 50 would be the better take. Because of the centering...

Jeff,

Im guessing the difference in price is approximately 1000-1200.

That's a tough call, Josh. $1500 will get you a damn nice E93. The only reason to keep the higher graded card, in my opinion, is if you really value the Nagy provenance.

We've discussed this before, but I would keep the 60. Provenance, the card pops, strong color, and no paper loss on the back. But that 50 is beautiful too so....
