Default Favorite cheap pick-ups of 2013

I just did my 2013 taxes, which meant a lot of contemplating acquisitions from last year. It's easy to pick favorites among the high-dollar stuff, but what about items that cost you under $200?

Out of the stuff I would never part with, I think this is tops - a set of 5 Willie Hoppe glass plate negatives. Unfortunately I haven't figured out a way to photograph them, but here are some images from the auction.

It was a good year for me with inexpensive but cool pieces. I picked up all of these for less than $200.

Here's a 1950 Line Up card from an SF Seals vs. Oakland Oaks game

General William Tecumseh Sherman signed cdv

Joe Wood signed Exhibit

One card I didn't know existed and two very coveted postcards that I've wanted badly since I learned of their existence just a few years ago.

Those Hoppe images are sweet. Tough to find nice early billiards stuff, but you can oftentimes get a good deal as the demand is not great. I love that stuff

Thanks, Jason - I feel very lucky to have some cheap collecting interests. Dan reminded me of some great inexpensive postcard pick-ups I made last year. The great thing about cheap stuff is you never feel like you 'need' to sell it.

Picked up some great local stuff this year, but my favorite has to be these two pics of Nick Daviscourt (1887-1960), former professional wrestler. Daviscourt wrestled Ed "Strangler" Lewis & Jim Browning for the World Championship in 1921 & 1934 respectively. Both bouts he lost.

One, with the 1907 Ellensburg High School baseball team (pictured top row far right)...

And one signed, in his prime, ca. 1925...

Not vintage, but as a long -suffering Jays fan it sure feels like it! A 1992 team signed WS Jays bat (Devon White model bat). Can't believe that I landed this for $190 plus shipping.

I've tried to limit my boxing collecting to Jack Johnson related stuff, but that Bert Sugar media pass is something else. It's great when those one-of-a-kind things pop up and the 'right' people don't notice!
