Default T206 Cy Young Portrait BVG 5

Is beckett gaining popularity in the prewar sector? Is BVG still around or is it stritly BGS. I hate the fact that one company had 3 different grading brands (BGS, BVG and BCCG). I think that hurts rather than helps improve credibility. I have some Beckett graded cards but nothing in Prewar. I see very few on ebay, but I was watching this T206 Cy Young Portrait which closed at a strong price. I was thinking I could grab it cheap and maybe cross it over... think again, Could be a shill...

I've certainly seen more T206s in BVG holders lately. Their holders are tamper proof and water proof, and they seem to do a good job of authenticating and detecting alterations. Since they created BVG for pre-1980 cards, the grading is a little more lenient but consistent IMO w/PSA and SGC. Personally though, I think they should have just one holder regardless of whether its vintage or modern.

Thanks for the responses.  Nice catch on the REA sale.  If its not a shill, that is a nice (quick) $400 profit.

You sure he made a quick 4 hundos? Add in the BP at REA(or is that already added in?) and subtract the ebay fees and he might have lost money.

mantra -- buy the card not the holder

Edited for clarification;

In this case the card is an excellent example regardless of the holder in which it resides.

I do think Beckett is gaining ground in the pre-war market, and rightfully so.

It would seem, to me, that a few years ago BVG was a 4th place among vintage card grading...but GAI has had serious issues and BVG is improving. Their holders have always been great (hope they don't change). Their cost is reasonable and for modern cards they are (to me again) the best. I like PSA fine but MUCH prefer BGS modern cards over PSA.

VINTAGE I'll take SGC, PSA and BVG now almost equally,

1960's to 80's I prefer PSA

Immediate Modern I only buy BGS

Wasn't the REA Auction where that Young sold, the same one that had the BVG Honus Wagner?

If so, I would guess the Young came from the same collection.

Who knows, with the record price for-the-grade set by the Wagner, I would make a guess that we could very well start seeing more T206's in BVG holders.

As far as modern cards, Beckett is KING.

Beckett has done a good job listening to collectors. In the pre-war market, I expect them to eclipse even SGC.

Steve,

Yes, there were about (550) T206 cards in that collection with the Wagner, all of which REA sold. We have a list of them (and images of all or nearly all, I think) at:

www.beckett.com/T206

The Cy Young matches up to the list - you can compare serial numbers in the scans.

Thanks!
Mark

If that REA realized price doesn't include the vig, that plus shipping might be darn near $1900 total.

Beckett has certainly caught my attention in a big way, especially after having the honor to test their slabs. I now know moisture, heat or chemicals cannot breach the slab, the card won't get rail or gasket damage and the slab itself is virtually indestructible without leaving traces that can be covered up....although I have not given up yet Mark

PSA is great for those who sell or play the registry game. I still like Global for the cards others won't grade and/or if Baker personally grades them. Beckett will now be getting my regular non-registry submissions in place of PSA. From our interaction I confident Mark has a great eye and feel for the cards he handles.

Kevin
