Default Cards of Negro League Hall of Famers

I collect cards of Hall-of-Famers that were issued during their playing careers. I'm pretty sure there are a few such authentic cards of Negro League Hall-of-Famers from Cuban and, I think, Mexican Leagues, and probably from other sources as well. Can anyone identify what hall-of-famers/cards exist?

Perhaps this question has been answered before. If so, if you could tell me how to go about researching it, I'd appreciate the guidance. I'm still learning.

Thanks in advance.

Doug

Default 1945-46 Caramelo Deportivos

I just sold the Ray Dandridge from this set.

Still have the Ray Brown.

Never have had the Martin Dihigo.

Lots of the Cuban issues over the years have had the Negro League players in them. They are plenty tough to find, but in my opinion should hold more value than they do at present. they are pretty special in terms of their historical significance...at least in my eyes.

The Puerto Rican Toleteros cards have quite a few HOFers too.

A great resource for you is the checklists at VintageCardPrices.com; you can search by player and it will pull up a checklist of all the cards of that player. Unfortunately, many Negro League HOFers had no cards issued during their playing careers. Using VCP.com for searching checklists is free.

You can use the old cardboard hall of fame rookie card page as a reference. If you click on the players name, it will generally list their first 5 cards.

If you utilize the link that David posted, you can specify Negro Leaguers on the dropdown menu and it will pull up only those individuals.

I have always wanted cards like this as well and was wondering if there was Clemente or Willie Mays cards issued while they played for Santurces. At one point, they both played for them at the same time briefly. Durocher sent a young Mays there to play winter ball after the season early in his career to keep him under the watchful eye of the Giants and away from bad influences.

Mays is pictured in the Acebo album. He doesn't have an individual card in the set.

That's right, Kenny. I believe that album was in one of Ryan's auctions not too long ago.

Does anyone know if any of the following NL HOF'ers are available on ANY recent issue cards (other than Perez Steele or HOF Plaques)?
Ray Brown
Andy Cooper
Bill Foster
Pete Hill
Effa Manley
Jose Mendez
Alex Pompez
Cum Posey
Louis Santop
Turkey Stearnes
Ben Taylor
C. Torriente
Sol White
JL Wilkinson
I know some are in the 1990 Eclipse Stars of the Negro Leages 36 card boxed set. If anyone knows where I can get one of those I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!

Most of them should be in the mid 70's Laughlin sets. If you're looking for more modern, there's a good chance alot of them are in the Ted Williams Co. sets.

Effa Manley and Cum Posey are the hard ones. Very little exists of them. I think I ended up settling for a Postmarked Cachet of Effa from 2006's Hall of Fame weekend. I believe for Cum Posey I ended up with one of the early 90's Negro League Postcards with him in the Homestead team photo..

Thanks for posting those Ken. I have heard of that playing card set but have had no luck finding one for sale. I think if you get the palying cards, the 1990 Eclipse and the Fritsch set along with a couple Ted Williams singles you could have mnost of the Negro League HOF'ers. What exactly is that Posey card, I can't remember ever seeing that one?

Thanks Ken. Great cards. I've been looking for a while, and have just not seen one of either yet.

Yeah Tony, I don't know much about that Cum Posey card other than it was part of some kind of commemorative Negro League set issued in Pittsburgh in 1988. It's not listed in my Standard Catalog. And as David said above, don't forget about the Laughlin Old Time Balck Stars and Long Ago Black Stars sets issued in 1974 and 1978, respectively. In many cases, those are the first modern cards of the Negro League HOFers, and first card period for many.

You really think the Laughlins are ugly? I love them. Everyone I show them to thinks they are interesting. I guess beauty in the eye of the beholder. I used to own the same Posey, I think I bought it off Phil.

There was a thread on earliest known HOF, I had it bookmarked:

I used to think they were ugly, but my HOF Rookie chase led me to buy a few anyways. Honestly, once I got that first one in my hand, it quickly became one of my favorite sets.

Sorry, love the Laughlin cards dating back to when I first got them in the 1970's. Trying to collect them all.
