Actually, all five. Curly, Moe and Shemp were real life brothers and Jewish. Larry and Joe weren't related to the brothers, but were also Jewish ... And, for the record, I like Shemp better than Curly. |

I think the better question is what is the percentage of vintage card collectors who are jewish? I think it has gotta be over 50 percent. And before you start calling me an "anti-dentite", I'm a Jew, so I allowed to ask these types of questions. And, on a related note, do we HAVE to claim Mr. Mint as one of our own? Please tell me no. And contrary to popular belief, Temple University isn't for Jews. Who knew? |

I'm a Jew (and- Bob--Vognar--is a renegade Catholic), I was born Mayer (no relation to...). I understand "Mayer" meant "gentleman farmer," and the name was was probably bought by one of my ancestors when it was illegal for Jews to own certain kinds of property in Germany. |

Alan, I can't answer your question to the population of Jewish card collectors out there, but I wonder how many card collectors out there are dentists. And before anyone also calls me an "anti-dentite", I'm a periodontist so according to Cosmo Kramer, I guess I can also ask the question <G>. |

Well, there is a little policy about talking religion on the board but since we're here (and I was born Kaplan, and am 100% Jewish, and got bar mitzvahed blah, blah, blah) this is an interesting picture I picked up. I read the names and it reminded me of being in synagogue. This is Cook's Bath's Team with Coach Sam Kantrovitz from 1912. The players names are: Fishman, Cook, Zedelaik, Feinberg, Goldberg, Kay(coach), Spector, Gelfman, Pringle, and Cook.... |

I'm Jewish by birth (mother). I remember as an adult teen stopping by her mom's house in St. Louis, where she got a typical Jewish mother guilt trip from my grandma. When we left, my mother said to me, "I hope I never become like that." Without missing a beat, I replied, "You already are, mom." |

I find it interesting that I have met a large collecting base for two major religions, Judaism and Mormonism. Growing up a Mormon in a large Jewish community (Maryland), and whose best friends growing up are Jewish, I've noticed that we share in common a hightened sense of community. When I went on my mission to Texas, I met a huge amount of LDS collectors (especially Dale Murphy). I think it's refreshing that my Jewish friends, as well as my LDS colleagues, have such a connection to those who wear the banner of their faiths. |

About the Madonna: I have bought two paintings from a good friend, one of which is a copy of "Madonna with a Green Cushion," by a 15th century artist, which my friend started in the Louvre, and finsihed in New York, where he was getting his M.F.A. The other is a portrait of a girl he knew at International House where he was staying in New York, called "Shira." I call the two paintings, which hang one below the other, "My two Jewish girls." |

i didnt bother reading all the entries but why do people have to make a point of someone's enthnicity? who gives a sh*t how many jewish ball players there were or are? if they're great ball players then thats how they should be remembered or thought of, not for being jewish...its almost as bad as the blacks err sorry, african americans..."he was the first black player to hit 40 homeruns in a season, he was the first jewish player to throw a no-hitter"...some of you guys make it sound like being a jew or black is a handicap...if they are great, then they are great! you dont hear anyone saying "damn, he's the first jewish player to strike out 4 times in one game!" do you? ....let it go! |

i TOTALLY agree with his sentiments, but, as Leon said, there is a policy against talking about religion on here, so I think it is best if we lock this thread. I meant no slight on the previous poster. I was just inferring that soon the PC people will come in here OR the people with nothing better to do but bash. So anyway... |

It seems to me that people on this board collect all kinds of different cards with all kinds of different themes. So if someone wants to collect cards of Jewish players and have a thread about it who really cares. The thread didn't ever appear overtly "religious" to me. If we are going to be that sensitive, I better stop posting right now. So if I want to collect cards of players under 5'7", can I have a thread about it? |

Pete- The people who collect and care about which players are Jewish are invariably Jewish themselves. That is why they are interested. Is it any different from someone who lives in Philadelphia collecting Phillies cards? There is a kinship and bond formed between the collector and the objects he collects. And this is spoken from somebody who is a nonobserving Jew. |

Many folks collect from their own heritages; nothing wrong with that. We are a nation of immigrants and many of us are interested in who our ancestors were and what led our ancestors to get on the boat. For Jewish collectors it is especially significant to see our ancestors involved as equals in the national pastime since the USA is the only country that accorded our families full equal status as citizens and the old world most of our families came from was blasted out of existence by that bastard Hitler. Also nothing wrong with a thread about a Mastro auction grouping that appeals to ethnic collectors. I once purchased an Addie Joss from a nice fellow who turned out to be the head of some Polish-American fellowship organization. Since my last name is Polish he asked me about my background and we started comparing geneology notes. Of course, as Ed Koch once famously remarked at a Polish-American parade where he was parade grand marshal (I forget which group), I had to joke that since my background was Jewish, in the old country his ancestors would have been chasing mine down the street with knives |

1. We will not allow too much religous stuff on the board. I don't consider this thread to be about religion specifically. I hope no one makes me (c)ensor anything but we won't talk religion so please don't. Talking about players with a certain ethnicity or religion is fine. Talking religion on the board is not. |
