Default Old Mill Brown back?

Posted By: Joe D.

Does anyone have a good way to determine if an Old Mill Southern is a brown back or the regular black back?

I had a couple that looked brown as compared to a couple that looked black (now in the hands of SGC with a bunch of cards getting graded) and, I just picked up a card at a local card show because I thought it might be a brown back.

From what I read elsewhere, Old Mill brown back looks like a faded black back?

Any tips on being able to spot one (for a non-grader like myself) would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

The browns do not look like faded blacks. They are clearly brown. Some people have posted scans here before.

Once you see a real brown Old Mill, you never again think that a faded black Old Mill is brown. The brown is very distinct.

I like to sit outside, drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home, I would be arrested. So, I go to baseball games and fit right in.

I've seen some scans, but I still can't tell the difference.

Nothing that really says 'oh-yeah that is a brown back'

I guess I have to see one in person (which might be bad news for my hopes that a couple of my Old Mills submitted to SGC are brown backs).

The scans don't show it well, but when you see it in person, you will know, without a doubt.

Jay is right, the difference between a real brown Old Mill and a faded black one is like night and day. Besides 95% of the ones I have held have been hand cut. Be well Brian
