usually the "buy it now" on ebay are cards at real high prices, but sometimes not. what is the best deal you ever got on a "buy it now"? and if you remember how soon after it was posted did you buy it? i picked up this vg+ diamond star lazzeri for $40.00 a couple of weeks ago(from an ebay store) and was happy not to have to bid against the yankee collectors out there. it was just listed that day.

97% of the board may not know why, but this is the best deal I ever got with a BIN of $39.00. It evens beats the 33 Goudey Hubbell PSA 8 that I got for $180.00.

A couple jump to mind:

A few months ago I bought a 1964 "Challenge the Yankees" board game for $135. This game seems to hold tremendous nostalgic value for people who played it back in the day and usually goes for very big bucks in relation to other sports board games. Personally, living in Canada and only being five years old in 1964, I had never heard of it before seeing it on ebay a few years ago. I don't know if it was even sold here in the GWN.

The player cards, which include Mantle, Aaron, several other HOF'ers plus Maris, are in very good condition with some having random creases and a few little tears along the perforations, but nothing too serious. The box, with a beautiful painting of old Yankee Stadium on the lid, is in excellent condition with only a couple of blown corners. It's probably the nicest condition example of this game seen on ebay in a long time. It should easily have fetched over $500, and possibly close to $1,000, if the seller would have left it open for bid and if he wouldn't have understated the overall condition of the game in his description.

Another good find was a 1952 Bowman reprint set for $39.99. For whatever reason, this is a short-printed set that doesn't come up on the Bay very often. It usually has a "Buy it Now" price over $100 and goes for around $75 when it comes up for bid. I was happy to get it when I did.

John

Last year I bought a raw Horrors of War #288 (Last card in the set) at a BIN price of 39.99. In was in the Ebay store of a prominent BB card seller.I had it graded by PSA. It came back a PSA5. At the time it was the third graded at 5 with none higher. Sold it on Ebay for $500.00

John H.,

Nice pick up on that game. You should know that it was produced in two different versions, 1964 and 1965. The 1964 version had 25 Yankee players, 25 All-Star players, and 25 blank cards with statistics, but no player names. The 1965 version did not have the blanks included. There were some notable omissions from the All-Star cards (Mays being the biggest.)

I've still got mine, a 1964 version, although it's not in as good a condition as the one you describe. As a 9 year old, we played it "hard" and daily.

Email me direct if you need more info as it's OT for this forum.

Got this one for $150. I don't know how long it was posted, but 18 people had viewed and passed.

It was posted without a scan, so I emailed the seller for one. Instead of emailing, she posted on the auction as a revision but at least let me know via email that she had done so. For some reason unknown to man, I was still home on a weekday during mid-afternoon when she posted the scan within an hour after I had requested via email. I was screaming through my reprint scan files to double check, and finally decided to hit the BIN b/c she took PayPal.

I planned on keeping it b/c I just don't have cards like this. But that ol' camel-trader Toby talked some sense into me, and I packaged it with another card in a trade for this one:

I love what I ended up with. I've always wanted a Ruth card, and am so thrilled that I ended up with this one. Yes, that is a small chip of paper loss on the bat, and know what? I don't even see it anymore. I just am so happy that I own a decent looking Goudey Ruth. Based on purchase price of the two cards I traded, I have about $650 into it. I'm as happy as I can be about it.

Between the BIN and the trade, it is one of my favorite hobby experiences.

Jim B,

I think the key is in one of the questions in the lead post - how long had the listing been up? In the case of the Ewing, it wasn't that long (maybe about half a day), but with no scans it lasted that long.

I got a T206 Matty Dark that will grade maybe a 2 (if not it's a dang strong 1) for $140, and from the same seller 3 HOF'ers in 2 or 3 for $45 each. In each of these cases I hit the BIN within 5 minutes of posting - even as low as 2 minutes.

So I think it's definitely luck and timing in most cases. It's being the person that happens to be watching in the first 5 minutes something gets listed.

Joann

Jim,

If you're interested in Challenge the Yankees, I encourage you to check out www.challengetheyankees.co. The creator of CTY is preparing an Indiegogo campaign to relaunch the game in its original form. There's a box near the bottom of the page where you can subscribe to a mailing list and get a notification when the campaign begins. That's the best way to get your hands on CTY cards and complete games.

Best,

Michael Sokolow

I picked up a group of tobacco cards with a BIN of something like $25. One of them was an N172 Hall of Famer. Everything else was non-sports.

Thought I did a good job buying one for ~$20 and getting it slabbed in a SGC 20 holder. Your card is one of the best steals I've heard of!

10 years ago when this thread was originally started, I definitely had some great BIN pickups. 10 years later and I definitely have forgotten what they were.

I bought a Merkle Piedmont in 2009 for my back run. The scan was blurry, and I paid around $30 for it. When it arrived I discovered that it was a Factory 42.

Around 2002 I was putting together a 1964 Topps hockey set in PSA 8-9 grade. One morning before work I saw someone had listed a card of Dick Duff in PSA 9 with a BIN of $295. I couldn't hit the BIN fast enough because 9's were super tough from this set at the time. Fast forward about a year and I broke up my 65% complete set on ebay because the cards were white hot at the time. I listed the same Dick Duff PSA 9 on ebay with a $750 BIN and it sold in about three hours.

I bought an N167 Ewing from Dr. James Lowe's son, Jeff, who is now a member. Eventually I sold it on the board to another board member with our very first live auction ever on the forum. If I recall correctly it just about doubled the ebay buy (auction) price in cash and trade. Most recently this was a pretty cool pick up...and I had no clue about it when I got it but it looks like a pretty good buy too and shown a few times already...(1860 Ambrotype ...picture on glass)

I believe a member here got a PSA 9 George Brett rookie for a song....but it was an obvious pricing error that someone exploited. Does that count?

Hard to believe the seller even shipped it.

Not eBay but COMC. I have bought 2 super rare error cards for less than $5 and sold them for several hundred each.

He shipped it....his son made the error, and he was teaching his son something about "honoring one's word" or something like that.

Yes I do remember that transaction now. Too bad more people do not learn that lesson. We would not have all to look at what I bought, is it real, I guess paying $5 for a $500 item didn't work out again I will just return it threads.

I think getting 16x N43 cards for $500 including a White Sox player was a pretty good BIN.

Couldn't hit the BIN fast enough when this got listed. :-)
My heart was racing as I scanned the list of cards trying to do that math in my head to make sure it was a good deal fearing that someone else would buy it before I could pull the trigger. It's stuff like this that makes the hobby so fun.

These aren't worth much value-wise I am sure. But as someone who collects women in baseball items, I could not believe when I saw these listed with a $50 BIN on Ebay. Original circa 1940's or 50's women's cleats that have been photomatched to the type worn by players in the AAGPBL. I was floored when I saw them and, like many here, couldn't have hit BIN fast enough.

D304 Cobb for under $500. It just sucked having to wait to get it in my hands to see if it was real or not.

1954 Johnston Cookies Aaron RC for $40. Bought raw and since authenticated for my type collection. Not just a good $ deal, also prompted me to learn more about Hammer's rookie season, his change from #5 to #44, and the various 1950s Milwaukee Braves uniforms.
