Default MY T204 Mission Accomplished Thank You Peter!

Posted By: Bob C

Finally picked up this last card to complete my T204 set. Peter Thomas was instrumental in getting this final card involving an interesting three-way swap with a private collector and Rob Lifson. Also Scott B.- could not have done it without him. It has been a 3-1/2 year quest. Thanks and now on to the upgrades...ugh...
Oh yes, thank you Julie for the Burkett, wherever you are!

I have always admired this set for its gaudiness. Nice photos, though.

I glanced over the set checklist to discover that I have owned about 55% of the depicted players' autographs. To complete a set of T204 autographs would likely be impossible. The set contains Bugs Raymond, a great character ("That man took seven years off my life"--John McGraw) who died in 1912. I have only seen a couple of truly authentic Raymond signatures. One of the players featured in The Glory of Their Times (was it Crawford?) noted that Raymond would often pay his numerous bar tabs by presenting a signed baseball to the barkeep. He would proclaim the ball to be the very sphere that was used to strike out (insert any HOF batter and noteworthy event here). I find it very odd that none of these balls have turned up over the years. At least I haven't seen any of them.

The autograph of another T204 player, Ed Karger, has eluded me my entire life. He died in 1957, so I would have thought early autograph completists such as Karl Wingler would have located him. Perhaps they did, but I have yet to see one offered for sale.

Sorry for the hijack. Back to your card talk.

EDIT: I'm starting to think it was Snodgrass who recounted that Raymond story. Oh, and I suppose I should remember to congratulate you on completing the set!

Bob,

Congrats!

Awesome feat.

Out of curiousity, is Ira Thomas difficult to find?

He was the first T204 I bought when I first entered the hobby.

Congratulations on completing the set...that is a MAJOR accomplishment!!!

I've been collecting pre-war cards since the 1970s, and I can't remember ever seeing even one T204 in person; so to complete the set (and in only 3 1/2 years) to me anyway, is incredible!!!

So, what are you going to collect next???

Steve

Quan - you are a funny guy. I am sure we can think of something to talk about at HP. What about how that show keeps getting more disappointing for pre-war?

Patrick - I don't think the Thomas is all that hard but he is a catcher . For whatever reason it eluded me until the end.

Steve - gotta' catch my breath and focus on upgrades as I mentioned. Not sure what's next otherwise.

Thanks!

Bob,

Congratulations on completing the set. Completing a T204 set is definitely an accomplishment to be proud of!

No surprise that Peter Thomas was involved in helping you out as he has been a huge help to me as well with the current set that I have been working on.

Scott
