Default Cecil Travis glove

Posted By: Alan Elefson

Hi-
I recently picked up this glove for what I believe to be a cheap price. It is a Cecil Travis Glove, but I cannot read the manufacturer name (it is in a circle to the left of the signature). Please see the scans below. I have several questions related to this:
1. Any idea on the approximate year of manufacture?
2. Approximate rarity/value?
3. What is the earliest player model glove?
4. Is this an adult model? It fits me, but I have small hands.
5. As per usual, any information regarding this glove or store bought gloves in general would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Alan Elefson

Alan. Congrats on a nice find. Your glove is from the Reach company. It dates to the 40s. It is very rare. In excellent condition it is a $150-$200 glove. It is an adult glove, but not a high end model. The best gloves have leather piping (yours is cloth), a manufacturers patch, stamped buttons, heavier leather etc. That being said, your glove is quite desireable among player model and team collectors. It also has pretty good stamping. I would replace the damaged lacing in the heal, clean it up with a clean cloth and leather cleaner like lexol or murphy's oil soap, let it dry, then give it a light coat of vasoline inside and out.

It is widely believed that the earliest endorsed player model gloves appeared in the teens, and featured the top stars of the day in order to sell more gloves, i.e. Cobb, Wagner, Collins, Johnson, etc.

Check out this site for excellent resource guides from our good freind Joe Phillips.
