Default Year in Review and Collecting Goals for 2017

Havent seen a thread like this... as holiday shopping for friends and family has killed the rest of my 2016 budget I thought I would share a year in review and 2017 collecting goals... would love to see and hear yours.

First of all, this is my first active year on Net54 so I wanted to thank all of you. A great group who consistently shares their knowledge for the betterment of our community. I use to be the guy who collected shinny Bowman rc's and drooled over manufactured scarcity like gold refactors. About 16 months ago I liquidated my collection of Bowman autos and got into Vintage and HOF autos... I havent looked back yet!!!!

Below are my top 5 picks ups from 2016

1) 1932 World Series - Game 3 (Ruth called shot) - PSA 3
2) T3 Turkey Ty Cobb - PSA 1
3) 1914 Cracker Jack Honus Wagner - SGC 10
4) Jackie Robinson signed postcard - PSA/DNA
5) 1956 Topps Hank Aaron - PSA 8

Below are my top collecting goals for 2017

1) Finish my 1941 Play Ball PSA 6 set for my son Parker (I am 60/72 complete)
2) Get to 50% on my 1956 Topps HOF PSA 8 set for my son Becker (I am only 1/32)
3) Purchase 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #144 PSA 3
4) Purchase 1954 Topps Hank Aaron (looking for a PSA 5)
5) Purchase a LOW grade 1911 Sporting Life Cabitnets Honus Wagner (M110)
6) Catalog my collection
7) Figure out my storage situation... with continued big cards will either need a safe or safe deposit box.

Would love to hear your year in review and 2017 collecting goals.

Thanks and Merry Christmas

Taylor

Here was our "2016 Goals" thread, so we can see how we did: 2016 Goals

I hit or came close to some of my goals, got distracted from a few also. I'll post my full update later when I have a minute.

I would like to echo this sentiment, as it is also my first year on Net54, and I have shared a very similar, positive experience. Incredible community you've assembled here, Leon.

Top Pickups of 2016
T207 Grover Hartley
My First Jackie Robinson
My First Mickey Mantle

2017 Goals
1A) Buy a House
1B) Save for a Wedding for 2018
Y) Knock out 1948-1960 Cleveland Indians Team Sets
Z) Snag as many T206s and Vintage/Pre-War HoFers as possible

Obviously collecting is at the bottom of the list, but I still need a balance of fun in my life. Going to try and accomplish Y and Z as best I can in between saving for 1A and 1B.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May God Bless everyone's 2017 with a plethora of good fortune and happiness!

I'd like to make some progress on my signed 1953 Topps set, in particular the high numbers. My goal for 2016 was to reach 200; I just won #263 Johnny Podres, to put me at 230. Over the past year, I was able to knock out a lot of the guys who died in the 60s and 70s, including Newsom, Dressen, Kinder, Grasso, etc. I'd like to pick up #169 Dizzy Trout, as he is the last Red Sox I need.

Cool, I forgot all about that. Happy to say that I hit my 2016 goal of completing the DeLong set +/- the Gehrig. I picked all of them up except the Gehrig so that'll be my goal for 2017. Keeping it simple.

I'd also like to echo this sentiment. Since I joined the forum in the mid-summer I can honestly say I have logged on multiple times a day, everyday. I must have read every thread since joining. I'm totally hooked. The knowledge, expertise and respect on the forum is amazing. As I'm just starting out I'd like to thank you all for allowing me to be a part of your collecting journey, it's extremely motivating.

2016 Highlights - A year of firsts for me
Mantles - 64, 67(2), 68
Aarons - 56, 71
Started a couple sets
Numerous other HOFers, Rookies, etc

2017 Goals
1 - A more focused approach
2 - Pre-war

A quick note which may only interest me. I made a handful of purchases on B/S/T over the last 4 months. It turns out one member I bought from lives 10 minutes away here in Maryland, another member I bought from lives 5 minutes from my parents house and where I grew up in NY. As big as the world is, it can a tight knit community when you surround yourself with good people.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays to all!

(2) Add 10-20 cards to 1934 Goudey set (currently 25/96). Added 9 cards, but I kind of put this set on the backburner for a while.
(3) Add 6-12 cards to T205 set (currently 26/208). Had the most progress here, where I added 51 cards. Most came through a large lot at Huggins & Scott last February.
(4) Add 20-30 cards to 1953 Bowman set (currently 83/224). Only added 14 cards here. Put this set on the backburner also, and got very picky about which cards to add.
(5) Pick up one exciting prewar card unrelated to my sets. Got totally out of control here. Started a slow build of a few other sets, including picking up a few N28s, N162s, E121s, and also started a big E-card project where I picked up 40 cards so far. Also got a couple T3s. I'm a set-building disaster!
(6) Don't do anything stupid, like buy a case of modern stuff. Success! I didn't buy any modern cases, although I still spent a few hundred on blasters and a couple boxes. Nothing major though.
So, in no particular order, my main goals for 2017:

(1) Finish my T209-1 set (currently 15/16).
(2) Add 2-4 more N28 or N162 baseball players.
(3) Add 10-20 cards to my T205 set (currently 77/208).
(4) Add a reasonable amount of cards to my other sets without going completely overboard.
(5) DON'T CARRY A PAYPAL CREDIT BALANCE!

My main collecting goals for 2017 are:

Finally finish my 1955 Bowman set. My goal with this set is to buy/trade for every card from members on this forum. I am around 20 cards from finishing this goal.

Pick up some T210 Ft Worth cards to get closer to finishing the team set.

Greatly reduce the size of my collection. It has gotten beyond control over the years. I have 1 room in my house that has a walk path down the center and the rest is filled 2' deep in cards. I don't just have doubles or triples I have 40-50 of some cards.

Default Year in Review and Collecting Goals for 2017

My 2016 goal was to continue with more catchers in the T207 set, pick up a few more T206 catchers with American Beauty backs, and maybe pickup the handful of cards that will complete my catcher card run in sets like: 1910 Old Mill (Thoss,) 1912 zeenuts (Claude Berry,) 1912 Home Run Kisses (Ralph Kreitz,) and lastly add some catcher memorabilia.

It was a down year compared to 2015 for me.

I was able to pick up a couple of T207 catchers: Red Kuhn (Cycle Back) and Paddy Livingston (A on Shirt) with a Napoleon back. All that remains is the pricey Irv Lewis to complete my T207 catcher run.

2017 Goals:

Still hoping to find these three cards:

Ade Thoss 1910 T210-6 Old Mill
Claude Berry 1912 Zeenut
Ralph Kreitz 1912 Home Run Kisses

Hope to find a few more catchers in the colored S74 silk as well.

Happy Holidays,

Patrick

From 2016:

1. Double my T206 collection from 50 to 100. Would like to include one Cobb in there somewhere. 0-1. T206 dropped off my radar this year. I think I'm at 55 or so. No current interest in the set.

2. Finish my 1934 Goudey set, at least the low numbers and get close on the highs.I'm down to 11, including the blue Gehrig. The rest are commons, mostly highs,

3. Find a T204 of Andy Coakley for my 1908 Cubs players collection.DONE!!!!!

4. Finally start working on a 1953 Bowman color set.Started!!!! 25% Done.

5. Collect the 2016 Heritage set and make sure not to dwell around the shiny stuff any more than this.Pretty successful at not going wild. Topps Now got me for a few cards.

For 2017:

1. Work to finish 1934 Goudey.

2. Have a come to Jesus meeting with myself on what to collect next. T205 is calling my name, but I want to pare down my collection first to make space/funds for it.

3. Break the grip that my old commons have on me from the 80s and find them another home.

4. Write at least one more player bio for SABR.

2016 was a good year. I picked up a Breisch-Williams at a very affordable price.

The search list for 2017 is topped by trying to find a Cleveland Piedmont Art Stamp. I am also searching for a 1961 Key Chain Indian.

You can find me trolling the internet for the 1961 and checking all the auctions for the Stamp.

2016 was a year of thinning the heard as far as collecting goes. I stopped and sold off various projects and took a bit of a break to figure out what I really wanted to collect. Landed at N172s, and haven't looked back.

My main 2016 goal was to add a Hugh Duffy OJ, which I was able to do a little while back.

Hoping to stay focused in 2017.

I didnt meet either of my goals from 2016 so far:

Complete another T210 Series....down to 1 in Series 4, 11 in Series 5, 10 in Series 7

Add at least two Richmond Colts to my T209 set......only added 1

It was still a very good year as I picked up a bunch of tough cards and made some new hobby acquaintances.

2017 Goals

1. Finish T210-4 and get to single digits in a few others
2. Add two T209-2 Richmond Colts
3. Complete my 1979 Topps Set
4. Obtain a E222 any E222

To go along with what others have said, this was my first year diving in to pre-war, and this site and all ya'll have been wonderful and a huge help. From advice I've been given, to deals I've made, to just reading old threads and learning, you guys have been an invaluable resource.

Since I didn't have any goals to start the year, I'll give my two favorite pickups of 2016:

1. Hal Chase T206 Pink Portrait from Glenn here on the boards (for my T206 no hat portrait set)
2. T206 Scoops Carey Old Mill (for my pre-war Memphis collection)

Here are some things I'd like to knock off in 2017:

1. Finish a front run of white border Memphis players (T206 Cranston and T213-2 Cranston, Carey, Schlei, and Willett)

2. Obtain (2) T210-8 Memphis players

3. Add at least 15 new cards to my T206 portrait set, with at least 2 HOFers

4. Add one copy of each: N162 (baseball), N172, N300

I think that should be enough to keep my busy throughout the new year. Thanks again to everybody that has helped and shared info along the way. Happy Holidays to you all!

My 2016 goals were,

T206 Matty white cap - completed
T206 lajoie throw or bat with a tougher back - not yet. Hopefully 2017
T206 Young bare hand - completed
E92 Matty Croft's Cocoa - failed. But I did score a nice T206 AB 350 Matty

Oh, would also like to add a Cobb bat off to finish the quartet. - completed

I usually end up with cards I had no intention of buying so we shall see what 2016 brings.

2016 ended up bringing,

'13 National Game Grover Alexander
T206 Speaker
'15 CJ Eddie Collins
'31 W517 Ruth
And a bunch or post war cards

None of these were on my radar, except maybe the Speaker.

2017 Goals...

Should be to spend less money but we'll see how that goes.
T206 HOF'ers with tougher backs.
'41 PB or '49 Leaf DiMaggio
Joe Jackson card

Other than that I'm sure there will be cards I unexpectedly had to have.

Oh - attend the National in Chicago this year.

Good luck to all in 2017

This was my entry for last year: "Keeping it very simple this year - one Old Judge "A" list player and one Old Judge "B" list player. I'll be happy to hit 50% of that target."

Through unbelievable good fortune I absolutely crushed my goal. I scored a total of 5 "A" and "B" list players including the Arundel and Cahill poses to match my glass plate negatives (thanks David Bryan) and a certain white whale from Steve Hart! That was way beyond my wildest imagination, but apparently the stars were aligned just right.

There are still 11 players on my "A" list and 7 players on my "B" list, but more than half of them (all but one "A" list ) are pipe dreams. I'll consider myself quite lucky to knock off 2 "B" list players in the coming 12 months.

2016 Goals:

(1) Continue to prune back collection and focus more on tough Ruth cards, trying to obtain 1-2 "big" cards (not necessarily Ruth). - Check. I'm very satisfied with my progress on this front. Although I sold or traded off some of my key Ruth cards (1921 E121, Wm Paterson, 1929 Star Player Candy), I also picked up some tough ones (1921 W575-1 H. Johnson, 1923-24 Exhibits). On the non-Ruth front, I picked up a Brunners Bread Cobb and Ramly Walter Johnson.

(2) Continue to make progress on small sets (W519-1, W519-2, W521, W590). - Check. This has been very slow going since I only picked up two cards this year for these sets. One in the W519-1 and one in W590. However, that single pickup (Ray Schalk) in W519 Type 1 finished that set, so I'm happy that I finally completed that one.

2017 Goals:

This is going to be continue to be more of the same as the last few years.

(1) Continue to prune back collection and focus more on tough Ruth cards, trying to obtain 1-2 "big" cards (not necessarily Ruth). The big ones here are that I would like to obtain a 1915 CJ Cobb and a E93/94 Cobb, both with decent eye appeal.

(2) Continue to make progress on small sets (W519-2, W521, W590).

2016 has been the best year of my life so far--by God's grace, I am growing in my faith, spending more and more time with family, and have been able to keep two jobs . Collecting wise, I made some goals over on Blowout...Here were the goals:
- A Michael Jordan UD auto (couldn't do it)
- MJ Fleer rookie, graded <5 (nope)
- A nice laundry tag (nope)
- An NBA logoman (nada)
- A booklet of even higher quality than the one I currently possess. (nope)

Hmm...some of these goals should have been doable. Weird thing--I posted this in early April, and also became a member of Net54 in early April. I found that my collecting goals changed quite a bit! I was done with the fluctuating prices and inconsistencies with modern cards, so I shifted to vintage. Never looking back! Here are my biggest accomplishments 2016!
  1. First T206 purchased
  2. Completed my mini-set of the SL portraits I wanted
  3. Added a 'Stache to my collection!

In 2017, I hope to:
  1. Reach 12 HoF portraits (currently at 4)
  2. Finish my Johnny Kling back run (currently at 2/11)
  3. Complete a successful SGC submission
  4. Purchase a "rare back" (Hindu/Brights/BL)

Funny how things shift. In last year's goals, I was working on my N-card runs. I abandoned that project pretty quickly and decided to complete a T205 set and begin T207 as part of my T205, T206, T207 run.

I'm down to under 60 cards left for T207 and my goal is to get close to completion by the end of the year. Have about 30 Broadleaf/Cycle cards left and several biggies, so that may not be doable, but I'm going to get as close as I can.

Aside from sets, just continuing to add other pre-war issues including international and trade/advertising cards.

I too had a great 2016, meeting my N333 Newsboy goal (one Detroit, one other team) and a player cabinet to boot. I also obtained a nice Detroit N173, a couple new N172s and some upgrades. I also have a special package under the Christmas tree from Graig Kreindler that will surely be a 2016 favorite as well.

2017 Goals, more of the same, obtain:
- N333 Detroit
- N333 other team
- N172 Detroit (still need many 1888 & 1889 poses)
- N173 or N175 Detroit

One copy from each of the four bullets would be a very good year.

I had a great year, but more in vintage, less in prewar. I got two sets knocked off that I had not even started...a very nice 1967 Topps and a less nice 1964 sets both completed.

Probably my best prewar pickup was a nice Broadleaf Davidson.

Always one of my favorite threads to read through each year.

I don't think I set any goals for 2016, but I had a great year collecting wise.

1) Picked up a '33 Goudey Gehrig
2) Upgraded my Bond Bread set
3) Re-acquired my first ever Jackie Robinson card (1948 Leaf PSA 4)
4) Picked up a few very difficult Jackie Robinson cards that I've coveted for some time ('50 r423, '48 Old Gold Leaping)
5) Acquired 2 1948 Jackie Robinson signed checks, 1 signed MLK Jr. book, and a 2008 National Democratic Convention backstage pass signed by President Obama

I also made great progress on my research of the Bond Bread set.

Goals for 2017:

1) Buy a house
2) Finally write my article on the '47-49 Jackie Robinson Bond Bread set
3) Make more progress on my Jackie Robinson master set
4) Design some sort of baseball related app
5) Purchase one of the following:
a) 1921 e121 Babe Ruth
b) 1951 Bowman Whitey Ford
c) Babe Ruth check
d) signed Dodgers ball with Jackie Robinson

Met my goals and then some. Added to my E121-80 and E121-120 1921 World Series collection. Found a rare Slim Sallee card in better grade than the one I had been offered at 1/4th cost, upgraded my Quinn, no W572 action so set is getting boring to me, Found a game piece of my great great Uncle Elmer Miller, maintained my T207 with various reverses and started a T205 Cubs with diffent reverses and up to 128/152 possibilities. Also went to a Cubs/ Dodgers playoff game where the Cubs won 10 to 2. Watched the Cubs win the World Series.

Goals for 2017, continue adding to T205 Cubs reverses ( need 25 more), look for T207 Cubs Napoleon backs, continue E121 World Series set, anything Elmer Miller, possibly sell W572 set if I can move it in bulk for the right price.

In general, a great year and hopefully more to come.

A laundry tag!?!?! I am glad you changed course. Our collecting goals change as we learn more about this great hobby. In 2016, I sold off a few cards I simply lost interest in, and used the proceeds to focus on Ty Cobb. This coming year, I hope to continue to build on my early Cobb collection by adding a 1907 Wolverine News (batting) to complete my 1907 Cobb Post Card run. Would love to add another tough Cobb post card like a Detroit Free Press or a Rose.

Default 2017 Collecting Goals

I'm not sure what my 2016 collecting goals were, but I'd bet that I asked myself to not spend too much money on cardboard this year...if so, I failed miserably.

For 2017, I'd like to accomplish the following:
  • Obtain a 1911 Helmar Stamps Cy Young and get to 95% complete with the set - currently 87.2% complete
  • Obtain two+ more tough (< 10 examples) HOF rookie/pre-rookie cabinets or cards
  • Resist the tempatation to pick up common (i.e. Topps) rookies or add additional copies of cards I already have
  • Add another color tint to my 1926-29 Postcard Back Exhibits Chuck Klein run
  • Update my imageevent website with scans of all my 2016/2017 acquisitions
  • Update my imageevent website with a section on JD McCarthy Postcards
  • Finish selling off my Rickey Henderson card/memorabilia collection as well as cards that no longer fit my collecting interests
  • Do not add any new baseball card projects

For 2016 my main goal was to complete my T213-2 Yankees set. Mission accomplished when I bagged the Chance. I don't know if I started the year collecting the 1953 Bowman set but at some point I caught that bug.

So for 2017:

Complete my T204 Yankees Set - Keeler and Blair
Complete my Cracker Jack Yankees Set - Chance
Complete my Fatima Yankees set - Chance
Complete my 1953 Bowman set (90 to go)
Complete my D381 Yankees set - Gedeon and Hartell

Next set on the horizon: 1934-36 Diamond Stars
