Default Teach me about T-206 back variations>>

Perhaps this isn't such an easy answer!

I'm 35 and got into pre war collecting about a year ago after a lifetime of modern (or what *was* modern when I was a kid)

I'm building a Phillies T 206 set and am at 8 now in sgc 40 slabs.

My question is: Is there a specific pattern in back variations? Are there only specific cards that have the serious SP backs? Do all fronts have all backs? For instance, does someone like Otto Knabe have Piedmont, Polar Bear, Hindu, Sweet Corporal....ect? Or are there specific back checklists only for specific players? Also, are there, generally speaking of course, ratios of known cards across the board per back variation?

Thanks for any help. I think this thread could be a huge help to many and perhaps I asked too much! I do have a few variations and would like to complete my Phillies set, in time, with all the possible backs (within reasonable cost parameters )

Hi Terry - There isn't a simple explanation for which players are available with each back but to answer one of your questions all fronts are not found with all backs.

My suggestion would be to first read Scot Reader's Inside T206 and then get a copy of Bill Brown's Super Set spread sheet. These two things will be a huge help towards better understanding which fronts are available with which backs.

If you have any specific questions about your Phillies set PM or email me and I'll be happy to help if I can.

Lance,
If you type in FYI into the search function, you will come across the threads TedZ put together. Each thread has a working checklist for each type of back. These are very informative threads and will give you a better understanding of how the backs relate to each other.

Default Scot Reader's "Inside T206"

Here's the link to Scot's "Inside T206" that Tim referred to above.

well its hard to teach when we are still learning but we will share what we have figured out so far.

Magie is your only 150 only and will only be found with Piedmont 150.
The rest you are going to have to do some homework. You need to figure out what series each player/pose is in and then figure out what backs are in that series. The information is in Scots book. It would also be helpful if you could pick up Heitman's The Monster

there are plenty here to help if you get hung up.

Default My spreadsheet shows these as confirmed...

My spreadsheet shows these front/back combinations available for the Philadelphia NL team. 14 Fronts, 148 Front/Back combinations. There may be a few errors but this should give you an idea as to what could be acquired. As for cost, others can share that information or you can spend some time at the www.t206.org page running the various front/back combos through the valuation calculator. This will give you a rough idea what some of the backs will cost.

Default Book

I must say I had never seen the book before this evening. I have been collecting T-206's for 35 years and love this checklist. I have just acquired a collection with some rare backs and will be checking to see how everything unfolds. My first Uzit, Lenox Brown and Lenox Black backs !!

Wow, everyone in this thread was such a huge help!

I must say the vintage guys are much quicker to share!

Thank you all. I think I will pick up a copy of that book via amazon and that checklist posted and the links are MOST appreciated!

A few more questions for you guys......

The Sweet Caporal backs..factory 25 and 30....is one rarer than the other?

And the Piedmont backs with 150 subjects and the 350 subjects.....again does one have a shorter print run than the other?

Hi Terry-

Sweet Cap 25's are tougher to find than 30's and Piedmont 350's are the most common back.

Except the following nine are harder to find with a Piedmont 350 back than others with Piedmont 350 backs. And they are harder to find with a Piedmont 350 back than with a Piedmont 150 back.

Dahlen Boston
Ewing
Ganley
Tom Jones St Louis
Karger
Lindaman
Lundgren Chicago
Mullin Horizontal
Schulte Front View

Send me a note if you'd like -- I have a fairly robust collection of T206 Phillies with different backs. Good luck on your collection! It's fun to put together!
