So I'm lookin' at lot 1278 Standard Caramel SGC 60 (5) and then I go to SMR which says $1700 for a 5. Do you folks think the SMR is (way) off on this card? Is SMR off on this entire set? This set is red hot lately--correct?

Yes to both of your questions. This set is red hot right now and has been demanding very high prices. SMR tends to be so low it is not even funny. The prices there are about at a third of what cards are actually selling for - give or take some due to rarity or popularity of the card and condition. Ex is a pretty high grade for an E93 and the Mathewson is arguably the most popular card in the set (though some would argue for Cobb or Wagner of course). But the Matty is so beautiful. I don't know if it is a good gauge or not, but an SGC 84 went for over 15k in the last Mastro auction.

Thanks for your reply, Jim. Wrong time to get interested in this set? I also think the Matty is a beautiful card and more attractive than the T-206 Mattys.

I don't know if it is the wrong time. Caramels are just beginning to catch up to where I think their value should be in relation to other vintage issues like T206. They are beautiful sets with interesting poses and a large percentage of HOFs(particularly the color major league sets like E90-1 thru E98, etc.). And they are a lot tougher than tobacco sets like T205 and T206. My hunch is that they have yet to reach their peak in value, especially nice clean examples like the Matty you mentioned.
JimB

Edited to add: You can see I have a bias for that card since I have a picture of it by my login

I think the E94 set has got to be the best looking E card set.

For me, it's a toss up between e90-1 e93-4-5-6-7. Each for their own reasons, but all contain great color, attractive/unique poses and great player selection. I find e98 a bit drab (except for the blue/green) and e92/e101-2-5-6 sets share mostly the same poses so that lessens their appeal to me. Then again, you can't beat a cobb leaning on batt or matty horizontal from any of those sets.

But before you get into all of that, you have to give props to the king: E107

Brett....you say the E94 is best looking set ?

E90-1 exceeds them all ,though I do not have many. The
E94 has just a plain color background w/ some of the
purple or golds adding a bit of sheen....but na ah...

Brett- I agree 100%. The E94 is the prettiest and sharpest looking caramel card set. There is no card to compare to the violet Lajoie or gold Cobb.

I am going with the concensus here. There is no better looking set than the E94.

E94 colors and images are sharper, hence more beautiful than any comparable set. To have multiples of a single player in multiple colors laid side by side is breathtaking.

e94s r the king of c1910s caramel sets. in nice condition their colors seem to have a nice gloss to them. can't beat some of those unique poses only found on e94s either (wagner, lajoie, crawford...some of the best poses ever!)

edited to stay on-topic...i'd expect 3-3.5k for the e93 mathewson but who knows anymore until the final hammer drops.

An E90-1 Matty SGC 60 sold on ebay in March for $2939. The E93 is more desirable (at least for me) so I would think Mastro's would have no problem breaking the $3k barrier.

As for most beautiful caramel set, the E93 set has some fantastic images. However, if combining beauty and rarity, nothing can touch E94. They are some of the toughest cards around, and if you break it down by individual colors, some are near impossible.

I think this one will get less than other EX cards due to the off centering. I'd take under 3K

Are we talking rarity or beauty. THere is no question that E94s are tougher. I just think E93 has the edge on looks. I would rank E94 second on looks.
JimB

P.S. The E93 Matty is found off-centered in precisely that way on a good percentage of examples.

I agree with Jim that the E93 is the best looking caramel set. And definitely in my top 5 of all sets.

Here's my Matty in EX (edited to give better scan)

what sold me on the e94s is the scarcity and the poses. plus i'm not too enthused about the orange back and 2 of the most popular cards in the e93s feature that...the cobb and matty.

the e93 matty are mostly found oc, just like the chance and waddell.

edited to add interestingly mine and jim's matty have almost the same cut to them, only mine's about 3 grades off!

I would have said E93, but they don't have different background colours like the E94 or E98. I would really like a E93 Waddell and McGraw. I only have 6 from the E93 set. My favourite three E94's are : Wagner Young and Lajoie. Actually, all of the cards are pretty neat looking, but the HOfers especially I like. I don't own any E94's, but they would be the first set i'd get if i had alot of $$$ to work with. The E97 Keeler is really neat looking also. I just wish the E97 set came with more HOFers. The E98's are also neat looking. The E98 Mathewson is the my favourite from that set. Slowly but surely I hope to collect the set. I only have 4 : Red Background - Lajoie and Tinker, Orange background - Bender and Brown. I don't really try to collect any one colour because i like all of the colours they come in. E91's are the worst E card set i've seen from that era.

If anyone has any really really low grade E93, 94, or 98 cards for sale, i'd like to buy ! I'll probably be selling some T205s and T206s so i can put that towards an E card collection.

I have a few questions. For every 100 T206 cards, how many E90-E98's are there roughly ? Why is there no Connie Mack in the T206 set ? I only see him in the E98 set...

talk about a hot set. all the E93s in the Mastro auction are already higher than I'm willing to pay. And I thought I was being aggressive in putting in bids.
