Wow Don. What an incredible piece. Way out of my price range, and I don't really have interest in football, and yet I'd still take it in a second if I had the $$ just because the image is so completely great. Just wow. I was recently lucky enough to see an imperial cabinet of the Detroit baseball team from the same period, and the owner had put it in a 19th C frame. These imperial cabinets are truly magnificent to see. Maybe someday...

Do you happen to know why most of the players are wearing the number 91? And why two are wearing H's? (My complete ignorance of vintage football is on clear display here.)

Sorry to steal your thread, but saw the image and couldn't help but comment.

Joann

Joann,

The 91 represents the graduating class year. I believe this to be a shot of the incoming "freshman" class in 1887. As to why some of the jersey's have H's and some don't, I don't remember exactly; either it had to do with some positions having different uniforms or perhaps the guys in the photo just showed up in different uniforms . There's a matching Yale cabinet up for sale on Ebay right now (not as well preserved as this one. You can see much of the same disparity in uniforms in that photo as well.
