Default Color permutations of W560 cards....who's the expert ?

Posted By: Ted Zanidakis

I have 4 uncut sheets of these interesting cards which include 49 BB players. There are of course
permutations of many of the ball players and some cards were printed with both the red and black
colors.
I have a Babe Ruth in red....does anyone have or know if Ruth or Gehrig can be found in red & black ?
I've seen Walter Johnson in red & black

I'm sure there must be some expert(s) on Net54 that can provide some of the answers ?
Also, let's see some of these cards ?

Here is my one sheet. Interesting that it is the single color version of the sheet Leon has. What seems to jump out to me is that it may be that the dual color set was produced earlier than the single as the subject to the left of Foxx on the sheet I own is Lester Bell, which I always though was wierd that he (a ballplayer) would be pictured with a silhouette of a guy in a parachute, however it makes some sense now as I see Leon's (dual color) subject is an aviator. Pretty cool pieces.

so would those who do clarify the years of issue? The sheet Ted scanned (Leon too)appears to be from 1928, and the sheet Rhett scanned (Leon too) is from 1929, based upon the player/team combos. Other sources have this set issued in 1927. Any info appreciated--inquiring minds want to know.

With this uncut sheet that includes Babe Ruth, I think we have shown all the basic 64 cards in this set, in sheet form..

I recently purchased this W560 Gehrig from ebay. Has anyone seen this type of color tint before on a W560? I've seen the background as a light pink before, but never this dark orange/red color. Do you think this is a true tint variation or did this card just happen to have a very "dark" pink background? Although although the Beckett review says the card is not altered, would it have been possible that the card became this way through some soaking or perhaps, someone accidentally dyed it, like what happens when you mix whites with reds in the wash?

Thanks for the info. It looks like orange is a valid combination for the background.

Orange stock has been used. I have removed the W560 card from my site, just for accuracy reasons of first year cards as this was a 1929 issue.

Hello! I just came across this thread while trying to read up on some cards I have...

Basically, I bought three W560 cards a while back, and I was pretty careless about it (didn't do research of any kind, really). Ever since they showed up, I've wondered if they were real or not.

Two of the cards (Simmons and Cochrane) resemble the W560 cards I see online in terms of paper color and other aspects, but the condition of the cards (outside of bad cutting) seems almost too good to be true (little or no sign of aging on the paper). But the most suspicious card is the Walter Johnson, which is a darker brown color (think paper grocery bag), and unlike any W560s I've been able to find online.

I've included a picture, and I'm wondering if anyone could tell me if the cards seem legit, or if one or more of them are likely counterfeits. Any input is much appreciated!
