i just got an unslabbed 206 Lake (Tolstoi) that my wife and I just
figured out (to some degree), but i need some help.

Initially,I noticed with a magnifying glass that i could see some back border of another card on the front. I kept examining and finally realized that
the back of the card had 'bled through'and could be seen with a magifying
glass just barely. The data, details,etc. matched exactly.
I've never seen a bleed through.
Is this sort of thing something you have seen on your cards?
Hypothetically, could the bleeding through have occurred first then
the front was done?
Is this bleeding through, something that occurs with age, temperature,
etc.?
Again, let me say that it is just barely decipherable, if you spend
a long while with magnification.
I'll try to get a scan on Monday.
In the meantime, any help would be appreciated.
This is a first for me.

Hi Barry,
The ink didn't bleed through from the back, but was produced when another sheet was placed on top before the ink was dry. These are commonly known as "wet sheet" cards and are quite common on Tolstoi's for some reason.

Many thanks Brian for the response.

My Tolstoi Pelty looks much like yours presented via scan and is
definitely a wet sheet phenomenon.

What strikes me about the Lake i just got is that the Tolstoi back
decipherable on the front exactly matches the back in terms of
placement,e.g. the reverse #30 barely visible on the front is at the exact spot
of the 30 on the back.
It seems odd to me that a wet sheet placed on top would exactly match
the back of the card that it is being placed on.

Have you had this happen? Thanks for the help.

Hi Barry,
Most of the time the card backs match up very well if not perfect. They either had a "good" stacker or the machine lined them up fairly well.
I have quite a few of these with several different backs, but Tolstoi and Old Mill are by far the most prevelent. be well brian

many thanks for the help with deciphering this interesting anomaly.
have either of you sent the cards in to be graded and been penalized
for this phenomenon in some way.
all of my cards are graded so i'm tempted to go ahead and send but
don't want to be penalized for something that is inherent to the
card's actual processing history.
