Default 1934 Quaker Oats Ruth...Your limerick did not win...most don't hit first ball.

It is refreshing to see how it used to be (see inset) when someone had to be a loser in a contest. It seems like it's almost politically incorrect to say someone loses, nowadays. At my daughter's high school, which is a very good one by all accounts, they have a habit of not letting any of their students "lose". Oh well, when they get into the real world they will learn, Not everyone wins. Down off soapbox . BTW, this is a pretty cheap way to collect a period Ruth, if only a premium giveaway. I hadn't seen the little inset notice before so thought I would show it. If anyone wants to show other pieces as well, that would be great and if not, well, that will be great too...

Cool picture - thanks for sharing the insert also. I'm mostly impressed when he says that 9,000 baseballs is more than will be used by both leagues in a couple of seasons. Let's see - 16 teams each playing 154 games, divide by 2 since there are 2 teams in each game and you get 1232 games played. Times 2 seasons gives 2464 games. Divide into 9000 baseballs and you get 3.65 baseballs used per game. Nowadays, you can use 4 baseballs on one batter.

I had one of those as well, also with the "sorry, your limerick sucked" card.

Oddly, mine did not come with the envelope - no idea how they kept the premium and card together for 80 years.

There once was a man from Nantucket... Oops! Sorry, it's a family board.

Nice premium Leon.

There once was a man from Nantucket

He thought Ruth was a muppet.

Good thing he didn't kick the bucket.

Leon - I don't understand the recent everyones a winner approach. I am only 27 but things were different when I was a kid.

I remember losing the city championship when I was 15. The pitcher for the other team was the ace for our high school's varsity team. After the game a kid saw my 2nd place trophy and said it was awesome that we got trophies. I shook my head and said it meant we were the first losers.

with that limerick I'm going to step out on a limb and guess that you'd still be waiting for your Ruth :-)

Another one added today. It's a 1934 Quaker Oats Ask Me full set with mailing envelope and instructions. I love picking up period items with all of the pieces. This one was mailed to Cleveland Ohio.....and it was from "Babe Ruth"
