Default We are the Champions ........... of the World !

Posted By: Gilbert Maines

Certainly the Old Judge set celebrated the Browns Champions of 1887, and Cullivan's Fireside did similarly for the 1910 As.

But Mugsy wouldn't wait for that recognition, upon winning again in 1905, he emblazoned "World Champions" across his team's chest for the 1906 season.

Well, that didn't work. The Cubs won the next three years in a row and 4 of 5. The Giants were shut out until 1911.

But it wasn't only McGraw who was so bold. The same happened with the 1921 Cleve. and 1927 Cards. And both of those similarly failed to repeat. No one has tried that since.

But I bet there are some cards out there which show the uniforms of these three teams, with World Champions across their chest. Anyone ever notice any of these cards?

Can't say I've ever seen a card with that, but I have seen film clips of the Giants uni and photos of the others

Jay

A good friend will come bail you out of jail. A true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "Damn, that was fun."

I think you are right Jay. I couldn't find any on a quick tour of the likely sets. I did find some big arm patches the '25 Pirates used in the '27 exhibits set, proclaiming their Champion status - but that is different from chest lettering.

Don't let Larry Frisch find out, he will print up some sets of these Champions.

from the 1906 Ullman postcard set. (Now let's not get this thread going on whether a postcard is a "card")

That is a great card. Thanks for posting it. Wonderful question, too. Now where can I get me one of those postcards? It is card enough for me!

Yeah, that is great. And if postcards were not cards they would be called post-things (which are not cards).
