55, but well preserved. I could pass for 54.5. Composer & musician. Favorite player - Eddie Mathews.

Athletic claim to fame - once ran the 100 yard dash in an all-comers track meet against Sam Cunningham (USC, New England Patriots fullback). Sam won.

Bruce,

I agree that Eddie Mathews is a great. I met him when I was 10 at a card show, he was a fantastic guy, too bad he passed a few years later. He was one of my favorite 50's players.

47, from and still in West Michigan.

I'm Director of Quality for a company that makes hard hats, safety glasses, welding helmets, etc. We are in Mich and STL, with a plant in the UK and office in Shanghai.

I'm just over half-way through law school. I'm on the slow boat - it will take me five years total going at night because I work full time plus some. It's very interesting. I also have 2 Master's degrees, so I'm either a classroom addict or completely incapable of making up my mind.

I collect pre-1915, mainly Detroit players with an unreachable goal of having one Detroit player from every set. I like that it's unreachable because it means I will be in the pursuit for a long long time.

I also look for pre-1915 cards that show actual female players, not models. Those are few and far between. Finally, I've started to junk around a little bit with HOF portraits from the T206 set. They just look really nice.

Joann,

After you get your J.D., I suggest that you get a 4th graduate degree, after you get that degree you will be ready to retire and you can collect full-time.

Sounds like a good life.

Thanks to Max I now know that Joe Torre & I will both be 67 on July 18th!

Originally from WNY state, spent 22 yrs in the South and ended up here in Providence RI in 1980.

Am retired w/ a lovely wife & a 16 yr old daughter.

Now spend alot of time on EBay selling part of my boyhood collection rather than adding to it, unlike most of you! Grew up in the '50s so the heart of my collection is those early Topps & Bowman sets--both Sport & NS.

Grew up a diehard Yankee & Mantle fan, but after 27 yrs in NE I am now a turncoat diehard Red Sox loyalist!

Who said an old leopard can't change his spots?

I'm 57, electronics engineer for Agilent Technologies (used to be Hewlett-Packard). Made a living the past 15 years figuring out how to test cell phones. Been in manufacturing, R&D, now in marketing. A few changes in that market.

Live near Spokane, WA. Not exactly the Mecca of old cardboard.

Graduated Purdue, both kids went to CU. So, from there I've picked up a strong negative bias against almost everyone from Texas - even though I lived there from age 8 to 16. But I think the Aggies are more rational fans than those from Texas. Best fans I ever met were from Missouri. Makes me root for Missou if CU isn't playing.

I'm planning on retirement at the end of this year, will probably continue as a consultant on a cellular standards committee. Very specialized, good pay for not much work.

Committee = A group that keeps minutes and takes hours. (Milton Berle)

editd to add where I live

I am 48 years old and am a Police Detective in Suffolk County NY with 26 years on. I have basically finished most Topps sets from 1962 to 1975 and am working presently on T206,T200 and the B18 Set. I had a relative that assisted in Running bi-monthly card shows at the Golden Gate Motel in Brooklyn in the late 70,s and have been hooked ever since. I have been fortunate to have via my deceased Grandfather to have NY Giants tickets on the 40 yard line for 30 years and also have season tickets for Mets and Rangers which I share with my brother. Bad teams, the retirement of Mantle and a move to Houston in 1968 did it to me!

12 years in those early days of the Astrodome convinced me to become an Astros fan! Every time I went in that place I couldn't believe I was watching BB indoors, sitting in a theater seat w/ rest rooms & beer stands close at hand! ---and by then I was USED to bad teams!!!

Moving to RI in 1980 and living w/ the long suffering Red Sox fans also did me in!! I HAD to convert to remove the CURSE--and it only took 25 more yrs to do it!!

I am a software application architect/developer who recently turned 42 on February 27th and am the proud father of two children (10 and 8 years old).

My children currently have little to no interest in Dads cardboard collection of old, dead ballplayers but they do find the fish, bird and flag tobacco cards somewhat interesting.

My life goal is to sell off a good portion of my collection and join my buddy Keith O'Leary in retirement traveling across the country scouring for the few remaining cards that have yet to hit the hobby.

I'm 29 years' old and work for a background checks company in Brea, California. I read this board all the time but only occasionally contribute to it. I started collecting in 1985 and got into pre-war about 1993. I collect mostly 1930s-50s but I have some that are much older...About 20 cards from before 1920..mostly N162s and T206 cards with various back advertisements.

I'm 45 year old Computer Networking Consultant specializing on Operation Management who after a few takeovers finds myself working for ATT.

Been collecting since 67. Getting close to finishing the sets of my childhood (67-75). Finished a low grade 33 / 34 Goudey a few years back and am now working on a low grade T206, although I've not been as active the past few years.

Like Tim (and others), I'll gladly wake up tomorrow to find my collection is worthless - then I can buy more cards!

Like TBob I was born on December 11th.

My name is Ken. I am a 45 year-old chemist.

I've been lurking for about a month now, and this is my first post. My collecting interest is acquiring an example of every Hall-Of-Famer. Using my childhood cards as a base (Topps from 1950's - '70's), I began buying prewar cards about 3 years ago, mainly off of ebay. I have only two criteria:

1) That the card be contempory to the player's active era
2) That it be authentic!

I do not care about which type or set the card is from. Generally, if given the choice, I will opt for the type of which I have the least examples. The more eclectic, the better. I also am not concerned with the condition of a card, but instead seek bargin-basement prices! I know this may not be sound, investment-wise, but I really have no intention of ever reselling. I actually think that cards with some wear & tear are a bit more nostalgic and capture the history more for me. But that's just me.

My HOF set is currently about 90% completed, not counting the people who seem to be impossible (about half the Negro-leaguers and a handfull of pioneers/executives). Looking forward to conversing with others who are in the know about this stuff. I'm fairly new, but learning more and more, and loving every minute of it!

Hi Ken- welcome to the board!

Some of the tougher HOFers are the 19th century players, such as George Wright and Al Spalding; and even guys like Bid McPhee, Kid Nichols, Harry Wright and Amos Rusie can set you back quite a bit. I'm sure you've found difficulties in that area.

That's a very nice looking N172 Hoss Radbourn.

That N172 Harry Wright has great character.

Beautiful 1895 N300 of Amos Rusie.

Just love that Cuban 1946-47 Fotos PC of Martin Dihigo.

You're doing very well with the HOF's.
Enjoy the hunt.

Thank you Joe - I appreciate the kind words.

I'm constantly looking for ways to add a new type card contemporary to the player's career while sticking with the portrait theme (shoulder's and above). It's getting tougher and tougher. Of course, there's upgrades too.

Lot of thanks to all the folks who have helped me. I love each and every one I've picked up over the past twelve years.

Now, if I can only get

1) Paul to give up the Allegheny Selee
2) Leon to give up the Lone Jacks Comiskey
3) Patrick to give up the Just So Clarkson
4) Matt to give up the Cabanas Hill
5) Richard to give up the G&B Spalding

...and I'm not claiming to have the dough!
