I was wondering about that too, just how they came up with those codes. Those letters stand for some part of the username, and I would think if someone kept track of them a bidder would lose his anonymity. While you are bidding your name comes up coded, but if you win it shows up in full.

The letters do not correspond in any way to actual id's.

I think the only part that is accurate is the feedback number.

Hi Steve -
I have noticed a handful of fellow board members id's
linked to auctions I have bid on. Most recent the E106's that
ended a few days ago.

edited to say - after going back to check, some seem to be scrambled
more than others?? Some though are pretty easy to match up. Weird...

I think I checked once and I thought the two visible letters showed up in the bidder's username.

I am curious to know what my harrywright username looks like in their code, but when I am logged in I can only see my full name, not the code.

Tell me what you're bidding on and I'll check.

You are right though that the hidden id's did in fact contain part of the actual id. That lasted a while but they changed it about 30 days ago and now the id's are jibberish.

anyone know if those results also get dropped when you do a search by bidder ID on closed items? Can you see items where that person bid even though the user ID is masked?

Steve- I'm not bidding on anything now but I won something several weeks ago (not baseball) and it was over $200. If I gave you the number would that work?

The # is 150153856776. I don't buy very much on ebay.

After doing a bit more searching, seems to me that you can still look up
what a certain member might have been outbid on and still see their user id
clearly, as long as the item ended under $200 bucks.
Anything that end's over that amount though isn't available to view and no
record is kept under that user's name, unless their the high bidder of course.
In that case their entire user id will display.

No it would not work on a closed auction. The winner's actual id will show. It has to be a current auction when the high bid is over $200.

Thanks Steve. I kind of figured that and I never bid before the last half minute, so I guess I won't know.

It looks like eBay dropped the bidder1 thing if an item went over $200 and went to d**s way...
