Default The N29 and N43 Allen & Ginter Sets

A recent post on BST got me thinking about the unusual nature of the N29 and N43 sets. As vintage collectors know, the N29 set of 50 cards, issued by Allen & Ginter around 1889, features six baseball players as well as 44 other athletes from a variety of sports. And the N43 set, which offers a much larger card with a horizontal image, consists of the same exact 50 players with exactly the same poses. Only the format changes, with an ornate design placed around the player's image.

So how unusual is it for the same company to issue the same exact set in two different formats? Was the N43 considered a deluxe set? Was the size of the card enlarged merely to fit the contours of the tobacco pack? It just seems odd to me, and I can't recall another issue that is duplicated in this manner.

Barry,

I know A&G did the same thing with other sets. The N38 Birds of the Tropics is a larger version of the N5 cards, for example. The same is true for N37/N4 Birds of America and N40/N13 Game Birds.

The large cards say they come packed one in each box of 20 Richmond Straight Cut No 1 cigarettes. The smaller just say one in each box of "cigarettes." Didn't most cigs at the time come in boxes of 10? Or maybe the Straight Cut was a premium brand?

N29's say that they come in packs of 10 cigarettes, N43's say they come in packs of 20 cigarettes. Maybe just larger packs.

Wasn't familiar with the non-sports sets Bill. Do we know of any other company that did that? There are sets such as D359, E104-1, and T208 that used the same exact checklist and images, but those are of course competing companies.

According to the American Tobacco Cards Price Guide & Checklist by Robert Forbes and Terence Mitchell, the ten Allen & Ginter sets from N35 - N44 are all large format sets, that reuse the same artwork as found in the following sets:

N35 American Editors = N1
N36 The American Indian = N2
N37 Birds of America = N4
N38 Birds of the Tropics = N5
N39 Fish from American Waters = N8
N40 Game Birds = N13
N41 Quadrupeds = N21
N42 Song Birds of the World = N23
N43 The World's Champions = N29
N44 The World's Decorations = N30

The back of each card says that a card is packed in each box of 20 cigarettes. The book's writeup for the N35 set says that each card was packed in a "tin".

It also indicates that the sets were all issued in the 1887-1890 period, so it appears that it's just a simple case of A&G expanding the artwork from the smaller cards, to fit a larger card in a larger cigarette package.

I haven't found any indication that other companies did this.

LeRoy cigars made larger versions of their T63 Generals set: either gold bordered or white bordered around the gold border.
1948 Bowman Football can be either large or small.
T202 Triple Folders have overlap with the T205 set for the side images, right?

There are others by different manufacturers like terrors of America. Yacht colors. Jokes etc. I'm not with my reference material at present.
