Default Joe Orlando's Mount Rushmore of Baseball Revisited

Years ago Joe Orlando did a Mount Rushmore of the top four cards for each sport. Because this is the baseball section, we will only discuss baseball here. The other sports can be found in the other sections. Anyways, here is the baseball list for those of you who don't remember:

- T206 Honus Wagner
- 1916 M101 Babe Ruth
- 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle
- 1954 Topps Hank Aaron

Do you still agree with this list? Do you think anything should be changed now?

Some questions to consider:

- When a card is so rare and only 0.001% of collectors own one, then do you think it deserves to be on the list?

- Should at least one modern card be put on the list? What about Mike Trout?

5 cards would fit if they were trimmed.

The Wags and Mick are no-brainers but the other two are real head scratchers. I would think a Goudey Ruth and UD Griffey RC would be hard to argue....

Maybe should be changed to Joe's Mount Rushmore of Trimmers?

i dont really think the aaron belongs there. For the others, even if the card is ripped in half and taped together you can get over 1000...not the aaron...but there are other cards not mentioned they you will..

The Presidents chosen for Mt Rushmore involved some arbitrariness, so the baseball cards Mt Rushmore involving arbitrariness fits. The number of four is itself arbitrary.

People will disagree which President should be on Mt Rushmore, so people disagree with the baseball card choices fits.

The 4 highest volume submitting dealers would be my guess.

I like the idea of the thread, but can’t stand seeing that name up there; the only thing worse would be a picture of his goofy mug. I would buy you a drink if you revise the title to just “Mt Rushmore of Cards”

I think they would be

T206 Wagner
1952 Topps Mantle
1914 Baltimore News Ruth
T210 Jackson

Alternates could be m101-5 Ruth and t206 Plank

Agreed; or at least some Cobb card should make the MT. Maybe the W600?

I think three of the four cards should be the T206 Wagner, 1952 Topps Mantle and the 1869 Peck & Snyder Reds.

Nothing against Hammerin' Hank and his rookie card, but I don't know how that one (over many others) got picked.

This would be my personal picks at the moment and can and will change at any moment.

1981 TCMA Wade Boggs
1939 PB Ted Williams
1952 Topps Eddie Mathews
T213 Red Ty Cobb interchangeable with T206 Red Ty Cobb with Old Mill back

I think the Baltimore News Ruth is a great card, but I think the M101-4/5 Ruth is more appropriate. I am not a big Joe Jackson fan and think a green Cobb or the 1869 Cincinnati Peck and Snyder is more deserving.

Just give it another 20 years and the 1986 Fleer Jordan, 2003 Lebron, 2009 Mike Trout and 1952 Mantle will be the list

T206 Wagner
1914 CJ Cobb
1933 Goudey Ruth (#53)
1952 Topps Mantle

If we want to limit it to rookie cards, then maybe the 1954 Aaron is in the top 4.

Certainly a Ruth belongs so take your pick. I'd agree that T206 Cobb Green Portrait or a Cracker Jack Cobb would be a better choice than the 1954 Topps Aaron.

I agree with this list. If given one more choice, it would be the Yellow 34 Gehrig.

In my humble opinion, I believe that any kind of Mt. Rushmore dedicated to baseball must include Jackie Robinson (or in this case, a card of Jackie). There are more important things than the dollar amount collectors are currently willing to pay for a given baseball card.

So, I nominate any one of the 1947 Jackie Robinson's Bond Bread Cards.

None of this per-sport stuff.

T206 Wagner
1952 Topps Mantle
1986 Fleer Jordan
2000 Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket Tom Brady

I think the Wagner and Mantle are no-brainers.

From there I think you have to include the 1989 Upper Deck Griffey. It's the premier modern card and has defined an era.

Honestly if I had to pick a 4th card, it might be the 2001 Bowman Chrome Albert Pujols Autograph. It changed the hobby. And while vintage collectors might not want to hear it, it's as big a deal for modern collectors as pretty much any card would be for a vintage collector.

I like this list also. My alternatives would be:

"T206" Ty Cobb w/ Cobb Back

1914 Cracker Jack Christy Mathewson

My thinking is that for this list a card can't be too rare (you should see a copy for sale every 2-3 years at minimum), but can't be too common either (eliminating UD Griffey). And even in poor condition, it should be worth at least a few hundred bucks.

I’d prefer a Mount Rushmore of cards representing the best of the four major sports:

1916 M101 Babe Ruth
1935 National Chicle Bronko Nagurski
1986 Fleer Michael Jordan
1979-80 Topps/OPC Wayne Gretzky

With respect to iconic and popular cards representing the four sports, you could do:

1952 Topps Mickey Mantle
1965 Topps Joe Namath
1986 Fleer Michael Jordan (yep, still on here)
1966 Topps Bobby Orr or the 1979-80 Gretzky (again)

The list is ok but very much each collectors opinion. Personally I think they should concentrate on catching alterations and knowing what is hand cut and what isn't.
