Default 1912 World Series Photos - ID and Opinion Please

Posted By: Robert Klevens

I recently purchased a photo album from Japan that contained photographs taken in 1912 in Boston.
Some of the photos included Japanese people in Boston. There were some photos, which are shown here from the 1912 World Series.
If anyone can help identify the players I would really appreciate it. Does anyone know how rare photos like these are and a possible value?
A few of the photos have notations including Speaker and Doyle as well as Snodgrass batting.
They measure approximately 3 3/4" x 4 3/4".

Original photos from the 1912 World Series are scarce. Yours appear to be snapshots, but of good quality. I'm guessing that's Smokey Joe Wood warming up beside the crowd.

The top-right picture looks like Joe Wood. In the picture below that, the Giant player walking between the two Red Sox players looks like Fred Merkle. Then, in the picture below that, the player standing in the middle of the group of three to the right (in the long black sweater), looks like Christy Mathewson.

In ways, it's more interesting to see the players in casual, warming up situations. We all know what a player swinging at the first pitch looks like.

Perhaps the most interesting picture to me is the one on the bottom left. If you notice, both the batter and catcher are NY Giants. It must have been taken during batting practice.

Also, in the fourth picture down on the left (the one taken from behind third base, showing the pitcher in his follow-through), I'm guessing that the pitcher is Mathewson. This is based on the fact that one of the pictures shows Speaker apparently being awarded a car. This would have occured after the final game, which the Red Sox won. If this is the case, and then supposing that all the pictures were taken at the same game, the Giants pitcher had to have been Mathewson, since he pitched the complete game.

In the last game, Mathewson pitched a complete game and Wood pitched 3 inning in relief.

the photos with notations may have come from Game 3. Note that they all have a roman numeral III. Also note that one photo references Snodgrass batting with the bases loaded. He only came to bat in that situation once during the 1912 World Series--the 5th inning of Game 3 (flied to left for final out). Incidentally, the last Sox pitcher for Game 3 was none other than Hugh Bedient--he who only appeared on one card I believe J=K Candy.

The regular season MVP during those years won the Chalmers Award--a Chalmers automobile. Doyle and Speaker--both participants in that World Series--were the NL and AL winners that year. It appears that these cars were awarded at some point on the day of Game 3.

These are some great pictures, as stated above pictures most likely snapshots taken by someone in the stands or someone that had access to the field. The size and pictures displayed are similar to what you see in scrap books and photo books.

Please go ahead and download copies if you would like. I am not sure if III meant game 3 or that this was the third World Series the Red Sox played in. I have received some emails asking if I will part with the photos or the entire album. I just received the album and would like some more time to study and enjoy it. Thank you for all the help so far.

Todd,

Thank you for the clarification about the car. I also noticed the roman numeral III on the photos and thought that possibly meant game 3, but couldn't figure out why a car would be awarded at that point. Your explanation also makes sense, in that game 8 (the final game) was played to a roughly half-capacity crowd. I couldn't tell for sure, but the photos seem to show a sizably larger crowd than half-capacity.

Here is an excerpt from the October 11, 1912 New York Times which tells that Speaker was awarded an automobile for being the best player in the AL before game 3. (Doyle just went along for the ride).
Outstanding photographs! Thanks for posting them.
