Default 1922 e120 vs. 1916 m101-4

Posted By: steve

Which set is considered tougher? And same HOFers in same condition - which sets singular HOF cards are considered more valuable (ie 1922 Cobb vs 1916 Cobb, or 1922 W.Johnson vs 1916 W.Johnson)

I am not too familiar with these sets, but I do know to throw SMR out the window when pricing these cards.

thanks, steve

The 1916 issue is probably more valuable in terms of HOF'ers, obviously including the Babe Ruth RC.

M101-4/5 as a group are overall a bit more common that E120, and hold up better over time.

The 2 sets are tough to compare......

E120 was found in Caramel packs by kids, often played with and destroyed by them too.

M101-4/5 group (Printed by the Chicago printers Felix Mendelsohn) was sometimes available as a complete set of 200, and overall has 20 different back brands (many are very tough, none are candy, most are department stores or bakeries).

The E120 is more easily compared to other B&W candy sets of the era (ie E135, E121-80, E121-120, E122, E220, V61-1, V61-2, etc.).

I am currently collecting a team subset from both of these issues and the E120 has been easier for me to find material. But this information maybe skewed by the fact that "Davidvintage" has had a ton of nice e-120's over the past few months on ebay. By the way, David is great to deal with as mentioned on a prior thread.

The quality of photographs in my opinion is better on the M 101-4/5 series which may lead to the M cards being more popular. Throw in the Ruth Major league Rookie and it obviously is more expensive for the entire set.

Frank, great post on your observations on the two sets. I learn something new every day reading this forum. Very imformative.

Regards

Michael in mn

As you get out of the mid-teens (1914-15 Cracker Jacks) - the colorful cards go away. The black/white issues rule the table from mid-teens all the way thru the 1920's.

Enter the early 20's "e" series and the "W" cards that some may or may not be actual strip cards - and early Exhibit cards - must choose favorite black/white cards.

Was just curious as to what folks like more than others - what is a little easier to obtain - thanks for input folks.

steve

Anyone with recent sell price - T206 Cobb red PSA 6 ? Thanks
