Default Is 1923 the worng date for Willards/Curtis Ireland cards?

Posted By: jay behrens

Is 1923 the correct date for this issue? I jsut went through my list of players that only appear on Willards. Only 2 players had their career continue past 1922 and 3 never played past 1921. One player never played in 1921, but played in 1920 and 1922.

I would say it is pretty safe to say that this set WAS NOT issued in 1923 as it would have included at least 4 players that never played after 1921. Personally, I would lean towards 1921 as the date of issue although a strong case for 1922 could be made too.

Interesting.

My only Willards card is labelled by SGC as being from 1924... and it is Babe Ruth so that does not help me determine the date of the card in any way.

Is there anyone pictured in the set who could NOT have been pictured in 1921 or 1922??

Maybe someone who STARTED playing in 1924?

I don't have enough data/information on the set - but could it have been issued over a number of years?

I'm thinking specifically of Eppa Rixey. He last played for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1920 - but he is clearly pictured as a Phillie on his Curtis Ireland card. 1921 makes sense. 1923 seems quite a bit off.

Jimmie Keenan is another example. Played one game in 1920 - and had a very short stint in 1921 before he disappeared from the majors.

There are 7 players that make their only appearance in the Willards/Ireland set. Only one of these players had a career past 1924. All the others started 1920 or earlier and ended by 1923, most being out of the majors by 1921.

I wouldn't rely on uniforms to set a date. Old stock photos were often used in sets. With no team designated on the card, it hard to use that as a dating criteria beyond when the photo was taken, but doesn't tell us much about the card.

Since Ralph Shinners appears in the set, and he didn't make the big leagues until that year.

That would make sense. No reason they would have made a card for him in 1921.
