Default December Pick-Ups

I guess I'll start the December thread.....

I picked this up today from a local collector. I made him an offer on it a year ago and he passed. I made him the same offer again today and he accepted.

Really excited about this pickup. I collect items related to the Integration, and felt like this document played some role.

1945 contract between AB Chandler and the MLB owners making him the commissioner of baseball. The contract is signed by Chandler along with a representative from each team. Those include all-time great Eddie Collins, Branch Rickey (who would sign Jackie), Connie Mack, Clark Griffiths etc.

Chandler was obviously the commissioner when Jackie broke the color barrier, and was an ardent supporter of Robinson.

Default Not anything as cool as the '45 contract

But I picked up a neat letter and Western Union telegram to the Governor of Maine from the Boston Braves.

Default 1860s Baseball CDV

Thanks to an advanced 19th C. image collector who is also a good friend and fellow board member, I am pleased to post my newest acquisition.

This incredible outdoor/ game-in-progress CDV also carries a 2 cent stamp and an inscription that reads, "A Game of Base-Ball, Hoboken '64" on its reverse.

I remember that uni well! Congrats on matching the jersey with the pants. Is there a story behind that? Anyway, 1973 was a very bitter year for Pirates fans, but that Stargell uniform is a beauty.

Randall - Love the 1907 Rooters pin and George Winter scorer.

Jonathan - That's a killer early in-progress image, perfect for your collection!

Great pick-ups!

No real story on the 73 Stargell jersey, I had been on the hunt for several years for a nice one and came across this one a few years ago. I was excited to find his 73 pants to go with the jersey!

Great bat. Saw the listing when I searched after seeing you post. Good price. Little rough, but restored it would look great.

If you ever decide to sell it, please let me know.

On another note, any interest in a Pirates era Tim Wakefield bat?

Wonderful! At this rate, you'll soon be acquiring old ball parks to go with all the original fixtures, uniforms, and equipment.

Default Tiny little pickup I couldn't resist

1887 Billboard fundraiser for the Gardiner (Maine) Baseball Club.

Apparently, it is a sin to laminate original documents, but I got this billboard ad and it was literally disintegrating as I opened the mail. Besides, it was cheap, and I plan to frame it, not sell it.

I wonder if this is the only one in existence?

Although I have no room, I really want a Candlestick turnstile. They auctioned some off awhile back but I spaced out the closing date.

An upgrade of the one I already had. It seems the 1960s were the golden age of dated World Series ribbons. Unfortunately, the Giants only went to one. And, although Paul Muchinsky said ribbons and dangles do not affect value, I love the trophy! First I’ve seen.

Cool pin, I happen to like the added bling. All of the 1971 Pirates Post season pin backs had ribbons and dangles relating them directly to the playoffs or World Series. The Pin backs themselves are non-descriptive and have no text related to the series or the playoffs. 1970s Pirates pin backs aren't exactly rare or expensive but they certainly are cheaper without the post season ribbons and dangles.

Very nice pin Rob. Do you find it difficult to collect Giants stuff for years where they lost the world series? I have trouble wanting something from any year the Yankees lost, 2001 especially. But maybe that's just me.

Great pick up Rob. Have never seen this with the trophy. Probably one vendor had the trophies and decided to add them to stand out. I found it interesting in Paul's book that he said ribbons or charms on a pinback did not add value, yet this particular Giants pin is valued at $35 in the crossed bat section, and $1000 in the World Series section with the added ribbon. I actually asked him about this one time and his answer was long and confusing. I decided to drop it and move on.

Agree... The attachments definitely impact the value. At least with regard to the less-expensive and mid-priced Pins. I've seen countless instances where the ribbons/charms version sells much faster (and sells for lots more money, despite Muchinsky's claim).

When you've seen enough over the years, you know which charms are original to which Pin. Most people simply prefer the more aesthetically pleasing version.

Default Pin Values

I have not seen the guide, so that colors this comment. I do know that after looking selectively for certain pins in the past few years, the value or prices I have paid for ones with ribbons and the like are consistently higher for those examples without. Might it be that a better way to describe this (once again, have not seen the guide), is that the guide values do not reflect or depend on the presence of ribbons, gloves, bats etc, and that the values expressed are for the pin back buttons themselves.

I think he meant generic red, white and blue ribbons. I still think even those ribbons add eye appeal, if nothing else.
