Default E98 vs E93

Friends, I've been eagerly watching the overall appreciation in the auction market for nice cards like the E93 Wagner, Cobb, etc, and boy that issue and those players have gone up and up lately, especially in mid-to-high grades.

Wondering if you think E98s in the same grade and players are tracking the same, or if they don't really correlate between the issues?

Sitting on a gorgeous E98 "Hans" Wagner, the same image as E93 in an SGC 7, red background (pop 1, wth 6 total graded by SGC) that I bought last year and am excitedly watching the E93 PSA 8 of the otherwise same card in REA pass six-figures this week.

Thoughts?

I have dabbled in both but am no expert. I had an e98 Wagner psa 8 and struggled to sell it for five figures not long ago. I think the black swamp dampened values of high end e98s a little. High end e93s just aren’t out there in the same way.

IMO, the two sets can't be compared. The E93s in REA right now are the top of top. E98s suffer from the BSF. The original release of the BSF cards were mostly (all?) PSA graded. While there might be only 6 E98 red Wagners graded by SGC, there are 34 graded by PSA @ at 7 or higher. And, there has been theories that some family members did not sell their BSF cards when the find was first release so if true, who knows how many more are out there waiting to be graded. Personally, I would not buy any high grade E98s hoping they will appreciate in value.

BSF caused a stigma for high end E98's which remains today, there are a set of collectors who do chase them, mostly for PSA registry in my opinion, a completely different market. The original circulation cards are a different market and the high grade in that market runs up to about a 6. BSF dumped mostly reds and some green on the market so the blues and oranges are mostly original circ. I don't think you can go wrong investing in Wagners but my money is on Cobbs currently. And every thread needs a card or two.

I agree with DJ. But will add, the E98 set has the worst card in all of pre-war vintage - the picture of Irv Young, captioned as Cy Young. I HATE that card, and I suspect many others do too. I would never collect the E98 set because of that card - I dont want to spend money on a "fake" Cy Young card, which is one of the keys to the set (sort of).

Between the black swap find and the Fake Cy Young, e98 does not compare to E93 in my opinion

GREAT color run Phil!

Thanks Ryan. I feel your anger towards the Irv Young card, now imagine my pain having to do it 4 times...

A lot to digest in your general question. Simple general answer, E94 are definitely a step up in difficulty compared to E93 and, in general, E98 as well, especially in higher grades (due to BSF) and not accounting for specific player/color combinations, etc. Below are links to two old threads that discuss the general populations of E cards relative to other sets.

I’m an e93 fan but have to admit that e94s are rarer and the colors are simply incredible. Hard to beat.

E94 is hands down the best E-Set out there by far. IMO. Superior images to other sets, classic Cobb pose, great Wagner pose, Lajoie hanging ball, etc., and they got the Cy Young card correct.

But e93 has Cy Young batting which is just an awesome quirk.

In my opinion, E94 easily beats E93, which in turn crushes E98.

I am partial to E92s, but I am a back guy.

I agree with this for the most part...I used to have a set of e94...now just a murray color run...great, unique set! E93 is next for me...then I'd take e92 and all the diff varietals. E98 is the least preferred to me...mostly due to the bst. I have a color run of jenningses.

That is a great card, and the Chase, Waddell, Ames, Phillipe, Jones are nice too. E93 still has an Eddie Collins that isn't Eddie Collins and some strange color combos. The E93 has Matty but the E94 has Crawford, Speaker, and Lajoie.

It would be fun to compare the poses of the HOFers between the two sets. The Cobb is the same as well as the Chance, E94 Wagner is better, the e94 Lajoie is amazing, E94 Crawford pose, doesn't get any better that, and the Speaker is one of his rare color candy card images.

I'd love to put together a 30 card E-Set combining the best images from E93, 94, and 98.

Great idea. Also, I didn’t think that was Collins but never out my finger on it. The gent looks heavier. Who is it?

Could someone enlighten me as to the difficulty/rarity of a color run of E98 Wagners from easiest to toughest. Tks.

Red is easiest, then Green, building a Master Set over the last 18 months I've seen two Blues and two Oranges available including the current one at HA. I would say those are the two tougher colors but there are specific player/color combos that are difficult.
