Default Back Oriented T206 Sets?

Posted By: RayB

Aside from Ted's well documented "same back" sets, are there any other collectors on here building the Monster based on getting every available card with the "same back"?

I have been working on the EPDG Back set, on and off over the last couple of years and found it to be a very challenging and satisfying endeavor.

Scans to follow.

Ray,

Do you still have your set on the PSA registry?

No. The Old "Dings and Dents" set was a lowgrade "all backs" T206 effort that got to about 65% complete but I disbanded it to concentrate on the EPDG's.

Hi Ray,

I've been working on an all Polar Bear subset since last summer. Currently at 220 of what I believe to be 251. Have most of the biggies - Demmitt, O'Hara, both Cobbs, Johnson, Matty, Young.

Also have a Piedmont Factory 42 subset in the works. Currently at 26 of what I believe to be 74. Have several of the biggies in this one as well - both Cobbs, Johnson, Young.

Best wishes for success on your EPDG subset!

Scott - Email sent.

Thanks Craig.
Thats a really great effort on that Polar Bear pursuit.
My EPDG count is up to 90 different.
I suspect there to be upwards of 300+ examples of which there are somewheres about 276 confirmed sitings to date. (info and list from Ted Z and an ongoing effort to site more examples).

EPDG's are popular and fairly tough. Bidding activity is active at auction (and eBay)and I've been outbid trying to find affordable examples. I'm not real fussy about condition but prefer the EPDG Back to be intact.

I love this subject and I am fascinated by collectors efforts to build segments of "The Monster" in a singular back design.

Any others out there?
RayB

Ted if your reading; it would be really great if you could refresh the crowd on your EPDG suppositions again as to relative series and available backs and your current confirmation list.

Feel free to do it here or to resurrect the old thread if you feel that is more appropriate.
Thanks.

I'd also like to thank Mr. Levy for getting me up to 92! wink.gif

Ray, I haven't really gotten into EPDGs, though I picked up a Bresnahan Portrait on ebay last nite. That'll make 7 EPDGs for me. So my EPDG breakdown is as follows:

I have 7.
I have seen 44 others (ebay, BST, Dealer Sites, Auctions, etc).
Another 222 have been reported as existing (Ted, Scot, Bill's Superset, etc.
I haven't confirmed any no prints, but there are another 185 that are undetermined (maybe it exists, maybe its a no print)

Basically, I have a T206 Master Spreadsheet with all the fronts and all the backs, similar to Bill's, that I use to track T206 front/back data. And I've been working on back subset spreadsheets to track the data in more detail.

Finally, I have several binders with 15 pocket pages divided into sections by back brand, series, and factory. For example, there are separate sections for Piedmont 150, Piedmont 350, Piedmont 350-460 Fact 25, and Piedmont 350-460 Fact 42.

I guess I'm using the subsets to pursue a Master set (minus the Big Four). Let's see, I'm 45, I've been collecting vintage cards, including T206 for a little over a year, and I have almost 600 different front/back combos. So, my goal might be to have 6000 different front/back combos by the time I'm 60. Check back with me in about 15 years and I'll let you know how it turned out!

Craig,
That's incredibly ambitious and really cool too. Keep the faith and keep pluggin away.

I am familiar with Bill's spreadsheet on the Master Set and have contributed data to that.

From what I've been able to determine so far in conjunction with an effort that Ted Z. has also worked on, there are 276 confirmed EPDG Backs (of which I now have 92 different). These confirmations come mainly from Ted's research, confirmed ownership or sitings of other N54 members when we kicked this around a few years ago, and examples (sitings)I've been able to add to the list since then.

Just curious; which EPDG's do you have? I'd like to cross check them against my list.
RayB

Ray,

Would you share the Cubs you have with the EPDG back? I am working on subset: Cubs w/ all back variations and nearly done but surprisingly not been able to find many of the EPDG backs. Verification would spark a little life back into it. Also, I saw a Cobby (Red) with EPDG at a antique show two weeks ago in vg-ex for $1300 (I talked him down to $1100 but that was it and $200 higher than my buy it price). I have the guys phone number if you need that card. He's an old tymer and doesn't sell on the internet. Plus, it's ungraded and totally authentic.

Thanks,

Eric

Ray and Eric,

I've emailed you both a copy of my EPDG spreadsheet. Hope you find it helpful.

This brings up an interesting (to me) question.

Of all the back oriented "sets" which one is the most affordable to complete? Based on expensive stars, rarities and the simple scarcity of the back itself how hard would it be for a smaller collector (like me) to get all examples from a particular brand/series?.

I think the most affordable T206 back subset might be the Piedmont 350-460 Factory 25 (not Factory 42). I believe there are "only" 110 different fronts associated with this back, and it doesn't sell for any premium to speak of. As for the stars/HOFer's, there's of course the six superprints, as well as Cobb Bat Off, a Brown, a Chance, a Tinker off the top of my head. I don't think there are any rarities. Perhaps Ted, Scot, Brian W or someone can chime in.

Edit to add: Baker, Johnson, LaJoie, Wheat, Young Glove, a couple McGraws, Gandil, Smith Chi & Bos ... so maybe it's not the most affordable.

Isn't there also a 150-series Sweet Cap back that only has 35 cards? I have no idea who make up the known 35, but I can't imagine it'd be too expensive to complete.

Regards,

Richard.

The Wagner can be expensive in the Sweet Caporal 150 set.

Not as expensive as the Wagner in other 150 series sets.

The 35-card 150 series I'm talking about is Factory 649 (had to look that up), and though it does have a Wagner, it's the far cheaper one.

Here's the original thread:

Regards,

Richard.

Edited to add: Obviously if Plank is found with a Factory 649, the story changes a little.
One more edit to fix spacing.
