Default What can anyone tell me about this glove?

I've had this a few years now, but thanks to having to pack some stuff up in anticipation of work being done at the house, I was reminded to bring it here for show and tell, and get some opinions on its age/value/rarity.

Picked this up at a yard sale some years back for $3. The stamping, while hard to see, is for Ellery Arms Co., San Francisco. Link below is to a catalog of theirs I found online to show the logo matches.

More curious about age than anything...not planning on getting rid of it, so value doesn't matter per se, unless its something exceedingly rare that I need to protect better somehow.

Probably a late 1930s model. It's missing the web lacing, which can easily be replaced. It's called a "tunnel web loop" model, as the lacing would be strung inside the two "tunnels" on the thumb and forefinger. Be sure to use vintage lace from a "donor" glove, so it appears consistent with the age of the glove. New leather lace would stand out like a sore thumb.

This style is relatively common, with lots of similar examples out there (just check ebay and you'll see a lot). But the maker/manufacturer is uncommon.

Still, you're looking at maybe $30 tops in that condition if you replace the lacing (the soiling and seam splits on the back side hurt the value). I would say more realistically $20 - $25 and that's just because of the rare manufacturer.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info! The lack of web lacing had me thinking it might perhaps be older. Great to have this info.

I had done a bit of research on Ellery Arms when I got the glove, and read something about them closing down their sporting goods side of the business in the late 20's. Could it possibly be 20's vintage, or is that likely wrong?

The lack of web lacing just means it was lost, or it broke from usage. It's not an indicator of age, as this is common with these gloves.

A better tell-tale sign of age is the tunnel loops on the thumb/forefinger, and when those were predominantly featured. Late '20s is possible, I suppose. It looks a bit more recent to me, but wouldn't rule it out. There are specific "glove guys" on the forum who might be able to confirm and/or pinpoint the date better for you.

Any significance to the button holes across back? The button is missing, but I'm not sure if that plays into any possibilities regarding age.
