Default 1940 PB Bobby Doerr.......

Bobby Doerr will be 98 April 7th..........the last 1930's MLB player, and oldest HOFer. Played on same field with Lou Gehrig, and many other all-time greats. Glad to add this upgrade to my collection. Happy Birthday Bobby Doerr.......a fine gentleman and always a class act.

Hey Tim, nice Doerr! He was a class act. I wrote to him a few times in the 80's to sign photos through the mail and he was always more than accomodating. He would always send some extras back too.

These both came yesterday. The Scan doesn't do the Cronin justice.

I know this isn't exactly vintage, but with this being a Cracker Jack
set there is a nexus to being vintage. Just picked up the Willie Mays
card to complete my set. Kind of a cool set I thought, especially
being autographed and all.

After watching the new documentary Fastball and getting a new appreciation for how badass Nolan Ryan was I had to buy his 68 Topps card to replace the one I had as a kid. Huge price disparity between a psa 7 and 8+. Does anyone else think PSA 7's are many times the best value for the card quality?

That's a really nice Ryan, A.J.!

Here's a pitcher I picked up this month, although he had a much shorter career.

Cheers,
Steve

Nice Ryan AJ, he was my childhood favorite (80s - 90s). It would be fun to get one of those eventually.

Steve - great Loudermilk, and a Louisiana card to boot!

Considering there's often a 200-400% jump in price from a 7 to an 8 on key RCs like Ryan, Aaron, Clemente, Mantle, Mays, pretty much all of them actually, I tend to agree. Nice card.

I own a PSA 7 Ryan RC for the same reason.

I like 7s but think 6s might be the best bang for the buck, always have thought that too. (as my avatar is a 7 and highest graded )

On some cards I'd rather spend even less and "settle" for a nice 6 or even 5.5.

Great cards Peter. Great examples of eye appeal trumping the technical grade.

Hard to argue with that or those cards. Often the jump from a 6 to a 7 is much less than from a 7 to an 8. But you can't go wrong either way, especially when you focus on finding a card that looks great for the grade.

Awesome looking cards Peter.

As always, some really beautiful (and inspiring) pick ups this month.

Rhett, though I really like the M-101-5s, I don't think I'd ever be able to look at that Chapman card, and not feel a sense of melancholy. And, as one admittedly clueless about boxing cards, can you (or Adam) tell me what those are?

Scott, I really like that Peckinpaugh. Call me crazy, but I think I prefer the 1914 set because I like them to have a little of the caramel coating from the candy. It gives them added personality. I really want to get into the CJs. Of course, I would prefer the more expensive of the two sets. Oy.

Peter, can I come over and look at your cards?

You're going to have to tell me how and the hell that Aaron got a 5.5 grade? Maybe I'm getting senile at age 44, but outside of a slight shift down and to the left with the centering, I can't spot anything that would drop this down so much in technical grading. The color and registration are flawless. I see three really strong edges, only the left being rough cut--but, I thought PSA made an allowance as this was common in the mid to late 50s sets, and there's certainly no evidence of wear beyond the factory. The corners are nice, only slightly touched. And, when I tilt my laptop screen, I don't see any wrinkles/creases at all. I don't know, maybe it's good I'm not a grader, because I could see this getting a full point higher, if not a point and a half. For a 62 year old card, that seems to me (without seeing the back) a heck of a lot nicer than a 5.5.

When I start hitting the bigger vintage cards, I'm going to be looking for this same grade range. Strong 5s and 6s can be beautiful without the sticker shock. I'm a collector, and don't give a damn about some registry ranking. Oh, and I want that Clemente!

Four really nice cards you have there.

I know there have been times in the past where I went beyond waxing poetic (apropos for baseball cards?), and I'm trying to be good, and only comment on a couple additions to this discussion. But it's really hard to not enjoy, and compliment everybody.

Spring is in the air. The first week of the season has my team playing far better than expected at least thus far, and I'm feeling like a kid all over again. Who can blame me?

I've been lurking in the water's........Nit picking here and there in 52 Bowman.

Beckett had one JOB! Apparently I own the only T207 Eddie Collins known to man

Picked up a nice O'Brien with great color.

FINALLY got a 3-Finger portrait at a very affordable price sub $75

And a HUGE thank you to the one and only Cool Hand Luke Lyon for the financing of my very first WAJO

That's a great card!

Is it a 14 or 15?

Awesome either way.

Further testament that this site is awesome. I had missed a 1914 Zeenut variation that I needed on ebay and when I figured it out the buyer (a board member) sent it to me for "future considerations." You can't get better members than we have here!

1.) I had the Large image of Leard but needed the "small" Leard...

2.) I used me "ebay Bucks" to get a card I had always wanted (admittedly NOT baseball, but the Stanley Cup playoffs are going on so why not!). 1932-33 O'Keefe's Beverage Ltd. Coaster of King Clancy...

Default The front of the new Burke postcard

... no player's name on either the front nor the back but that's okay because no one except Chuck Klein looks like Chuck Klein.....

...The seller said he thought it might be from the 1933 All Star game. Sounds about right. Others on here would know for sure so thanks guys....

..The Orcajo Dimaggio with the curious stains on the back is just in the scan for scale ; I've had it for years ; I bought it back when I had money..

..
