Default Rookie Card

Posted By: Kenny Cole

My wife also understands all that frilly stuff. However, she is totally sports-impaired. She has a vocal music/entertainment sort of background, plays and whatnot.

Soon after we first met, I foolishly recruited my wife-to-be to play for my firm's co-ed softball team. She agreed to play and asked when "rehearsal" was. That should have been my first clue. I explained that "rehearsal" was actually called "practice" and gave her the date and time.

She promptly showed up at the appropriate date and time. She had even gone out and bought a glove. Unfortunately, it was for the wrong hand. She had a glove on her right hand and she's right handed. When I asked her how she intended to throw a ball with her left hand (erroneously assuming that she might actually field a ball and have to throw at some point during the season), she allowed that she really hadn't given it too much thought. I knew right then that we were in serious trouble (and we were).

We stuck her in right field. In the very first game, a pop fly was lofted right at her. As the center fielder ran toward the ball, she watched it coming, asked him "are you going to get that," stuck out her arm (correct arm, with correct glove), did not move an inch, and literally watched the ball land two feet away and roll to her feet. I almost stroked out. And they used to ask me why I drank before the games . . . .

Fortunately, she had many other good qualities and I was ultimately able to overcome the softball issues. I am now waiting for our 3-year old to get a little older so she can become a soccer mom. That should be interesting.

Kenny
