1. What is your focus today, in collecting?
Primary - E107 HOFers
Secondary - Nicely centered, midgrade (EX/NM or so) 1933 Goudey HOFers
Tertiary - Other significant cards of HOFers not in those 2 sets

2. What are the 3 cards you need most?
Need? None. It's a hobby. Want? The list is plentiful, but some of the notable HOFers in the E107 set would be nice (Lajoie, etc.)

3. Do you like to trade, buy, or a combination when you do acquire your needs?
Mostly buy, but would like to trade more.

4. Has the economy forced you to sell things you wouldn't have otherwise?
No.

5. What is your absolute favorite series, why?
I love the E107s for several reasons. The nice looking b&w photographs, the surplus of HOFers, and the rarity.

6. How do you enjoy acquiring your cards most- Ebay, auction, BST, shows etc...?
I enjoy BST the most, but am an equal opportunist between eBay and auction houses. I will be going to my first national show as a vintage collector this year, so that may surpass the others... we'll see.

7. What do you do for a living, how old are you and where do you live?
I am 36, live in Riverview, Florida (Tampa Bay area), and am a Forensic Structural Engineer

... on second thought, I said it was a hobby and that it isn't a need. If it is also an addiction, then I guess "need" is more appropriate.

1. What is your focus today, in collecting?

Focus has always been sets, both sports and non-sports. Always have several in various stages of completion.

2. What are the 3 cards you need most?

Actually, it's four. 1932 NY Giants Schedule Postcards. Still need Allen, Bell, Healey and Leslie. Have needed them for 20 years or so. I'm sure 2009 will be different.

3. Do you like to trade, buy, or a combination when you do acquire your needs?

Combination is fine, but would always be willing to buy.

4. Has the economy forced you to sell things you wouldn't have otherwise?

No, but I have slowed my buying a little, and have considered selling some non-baseball sets (e.g.- Basketball)

5. What is your absolute favorite series, why?

1933 Goudey. To me it was the widespread start of the modern Baseball card (aimed at kids, not tobacco using adults.)

6. How do you enjoy acquiring your cards most- Ebay, auction, BST, shows etc...?

Haven't done a show in over 10 years, so Ebay and auction houses it is. BST has been a great plus.

7. What do you do for a living, how old are you and where do you live?

Retired Retail Executive. Almost 54. Live 20 mile north of Dallas, TX.

Rob D,

"7. What do you do for a living, how old are you and where do you live?

We live in the greatest city in the world."

Really? We lived in that city for 10 years, from 1995-2005. I mean... we liked it but it really was a cowtown.

1. What is your focus today, in collecting?
Paying off the last couple of cards I purchased.

2. What are the 3 cards you need most?
I'd like to eventually own a 1934 Goudey Gehrig,
a T205 Addie Joss and a Satchell Paige card.

3. Do you like to trade, buy, or a combination when you do acquire your needs?
Buy.

4. Has the economy forced you to sell things you wouldn't have otherwise?
Thankfully, no.

5. What is your absolute favorite series, why?
Philadelphia Caramel's E95 set. I've spent the
the last 18 months researching this set, discovering
it's many nuances, as well as learning about this
confectionery company. In doing so, I've developed
a great fondness for this set.

6. How do you enjoy acquiring your cards most- Ebay, auction, BST, shows etc...?
While it's a little nerveracking, I enjoy the thrill
of being the high bidder and declared the winner in
an auction format. However, I still find great
happiness buy cards the "old fashion" way, at card shows.

7. What do you do for a living, how old are you and where do you live?

1. What is your focus today, in collecting?
**I have exactly 16 different Sub-collection focal points which I like to attend to, according to budget, opportunity and desire. This has proven to be a very sound method to maximize my out of pocket expenses while justifying a focused collection of otherwise unrelated baseball memorabilia!
Some of the more prominent sub-collections include family items, vintage Cubs tobacco cards, HOF rookies, and modern player collections including Ozzie, Kirby, Ron Cey, and the Rickey.

2. What are the 3 cards you need most?
**I would love to have the funds for a solid Leaf Musial rookie, a nice 1934 Goudey Greenberg, and a good looking Gehrig, regardless of issue.

3. Do you like to trade, buy, or a combination when you do acquire your needs?
**Generally buy, but trades are fun when they work out.

4. Has the economy forced you to sell things you wouldn't have otherwise?
**No. Neither my spending pace nor dollar levels have ever been what you would call, signficant. For instance, I have yet to participate in an auction house event. I find those to be terribly intimidating, for some reason. Perhaps it is the buyer's premium concept that I find so ridiculously insulting to my intelligence. As an aside, I have found that with funds drying up, relatively speaking, i am having a great deal of fun turning my attention to doing more baseball research.

5. What is your absolute favorite series, why?
Too tough to call, honestly. But if pressed, I think the early Bowmans (1950 and 51) because of their simplicity and artwork. Pre-war, it would be the T206s for the same reasons.

6. How do you enjoy acquiring your cards most- Ebay, auction, BST, shows etc...?
**Shows are the most fun. Ebay is the easiest and cheapest, but seems to rob me of some of the experience.

7. What do you do for a living, how old are you and where do you live?
**As soon as I figure these out, I will certainly let you all in on the answers!

1) My focus is on Kansas baseball and the players from there. Pretty much anything pre 1960, but the older the better.

2) Three cards I'd love to get. First is the 1887 Topeka Goldsby Golden Giants Cabinet card. Missed out on it at auction. Second would be the 1918 Chicago White Sox at Camp Funston postcard. Third would be any postcard I don't have from the World Tour at Blue Rapids, KS.

3) I mainly acquire what I want by buying but will trade for the right items.

4) So far the economy hasn't forced me to sell anything.

5) My favorite series of cards would be the Fan Craze cards. I really like the assortment of players, the affordability for most, and the pictures used.

6) I obtain mostly through ebay and auctions but some through collector friends and my local card shop.

7) I work in the aircraft industry, 40 years old and live in Kansas.

Clint

1. What is your focus today, in collecting?
D311 (Vernon players)
T210-1 (all)
Boxing: T9 (24/26), T225-1 (all 10 possible backs, all Battling Nelson fronts 5/10), T225-2 (17/25), E77 (have full set, but always looking for border variations).

2. What are the 3 cards you need most?
Any that would help the above, but 3 I'd take just because they're so cool:
Any T224/229 esp. Harley Davidson (his Savannah racing is mentioned in bio), T227 D'Oro (Grizzly old, tweed jacket wearing, left handed pool player), T212-1 Mohler (Mohler in his Bowler hat).

3. Do you like to trade, buy, or a combination when you do acquire your needs?
Like 'em all.

4. Has the economy forced you to sell things you wouldn't have otherwise?
In a way, yes. It's forced me to be more focused into sets that are a bit tougher, yet the finds are more satisfying.

5. What is your absolute favorite series, why?
T9, absolutely beautiful !!!!

6. How do you enjoy acquiring your cards most- Ebay, auction, BST, shows etc...?
Never been to a card show in my life. Pure internet collector, ebay, some online auctions, and of course, the best, BST.

7. What do you do for a living, how old are you and where do you live?
After 15 years with Exxon/Mobil Environmental Toxicology, 8 years in baseball minor league administration (ticket guy), I've worked my way down to serving tables in a sports bar in Savannah, GA (and St. Pattys is only 2 weeks away .... oh my happy.gif). Live in Savannah downtown historic district, and my drivers license says I'm 48.

1. What is your focus today, in collecting?

I'm trying to complete a T202 set, a Dick Hoblitzell type set, and 1952 Topps Cubs and Red Sox

2. What are the 3 cards you need most?

1. A T205 Hoblitzell No Stats (right!)
2. Speaker/Wood T202s seem to elude me
3. Cobb T202s in rough shape

3. Do you like to trade, buy, or a combination when you do acquire your needs?

I love trading, but I'm geographically seperated from my collection, so it's tough.

4. Has the economy forced you to sell things you wouldn't have otherwise?

No

5. What is your absolute favorite series, why?

T202 is the best - I love T205s, plus you get the bonus center panel - and no variations!

6. How do you enjoy acquiring your cards most- Ebay, auction, BST, shows etc...?

If I could afford it, I'd like the Major Houses, but I can't, so it's Ebay and B/S/T.

7. What do you do for a living, how old are you and where do you live?

I'm 41, a Lt Col Pilot in the Air Force, living in Navarre, FL.

Take Care,
Geno

1. I've never had a focus. I collect almost everything.

2. Tip Top Barney Dreyfuss; W600 Burkett; Cabanas or Punch Pete Hill.

3. I like to trade, but have such a hard time trading away anything good, so I end up buying.

4. Nope.

5. I can't choose a single series. I'd say my four favorites from before WWII are N162, N173, Turkey Red, and T205.

6. I "enjoy" acquiring cards most through major auctions since they have the best stuff. But I am rarely willing to pony up those high prices. So it's mostly ebay for me.

7. Patent and trademark lawyer. 43. Southern California.

Nice thread Leon. I find it very interesting to see other Board Members answers.

1. What is your focus today, in collecting?
Pre War Red Sox cards. Pre War and a few 50's (Parkies) and 60's Boston Bruins Hockey cards. I love old Hockey cards. A couple of 50's Topps sets.

2. What are the 3 cards you need most?
A. M101-4/5 Babe Ruth
B. M116 Joe Wood
C. E-107 Redsox- Have about half, Cy Young and Jimmy Collins are on the want list.

3. Do you like to trade, buy, or a combination when you do acquire your needs?
I would love to trade but have not in quite awhile so I am buying.

4. Has the economy forced you to sell things you wouldn't have otherwise?
No! Waiting for the bottom to fall out on prices so we can buy more (ha).

5. What is your absolute favorite series, why?
T-207 because they are different (some might say ugly) and they were issued in 1912 and there are a ton of Red Sox and they were World Series winners in 1912.

6. How do you enjoy acquiring your cards most- Ebay, auction, BST, shows etc...?
I really like the B/S/T but it is a mixture of all of the above for me.

7. What do you do for a living, how old are you and where do you live?
It's interesting how a few dodge this last question. I am a Sales Manager, 47, and live 50 miles south of the Twin Cities (MN) and love it (although it's not Hawai'i, darn that David M).

1.What is your focus today, in collecting?
I'm focusing on putting together a T206 set, both graded and raw, but I pick up other cards from time to time that catch my eye.

2.What are the 3 cards you need most?
Any T206 that gets me closer to finishing the set.

3.Do you like to trade, buy, or the combination when you do acquire your needs?
I mostly buy.

4.Has the economy forced you to sell things you wouldn't have otherwise?
Actually it has helped me. I have picked up more cards (T206s) due to the economy.

5.What is your absolute favorite series, why?
T3 Turkey Reds - I like the full length images of the players, along with the background scenery included.

6.How do you enjoy acquiring your cards most- Ebay, auction, BST, shows, etc....?
Ebay used to be my main provider for T206s until I joined this forum. I still pick up a few here & there at shows. Our very own BST is my main source now. I will say that I like the BST the most.

7.What do you do for a living, how old are you and where do you live?

1. Collecting Focus - Probably certain "sub-sets" I've created for N172

2. The three cards I'd most like to have: N172 Hecker; N172 Browning; N172 Delahanty

3. I mostly buy what I want. Sometimes I'll trade or sell something off.

4. So far the economy hasn't forced me to sell anything. If things get bad I guess I'd have to sell the wife and house before selling the cards.

5. Favorite series is N172. It's the first large set for baseball cards. It's baseball in it's infant stages. It's history. Read the books and relive it when you look at the cards.

6. I pick up cards on ebay, from auction houses, at a few shows and on the BST.

7. I provide technical support for a service organization that manufactures electrical distribution and emergency power generation equipment for a lot of different businesses and facilities. I'm nearing the half century mark and I live in Southern California.

1. What is your focus today, in collecting?
T206 (HOFers only), 1933 Goudey, and in the post-war arena, certain player sets such as those of Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, and a few other favorite players. I also work with my 20 year old son on some of the modern stuff (baseball and football) he collects. He is also interested in vintage Red Ruffing so that gets us into Diamond Stars, Play Balls, etc.

2. What are the 3 cards you need most?
I have essentially completed all the sets I started, so am mainly only looking for a few upgrades here or there at this point.

3. Do you like to trade, buy, or a combination when you do acquire your needs?
Primarily buy, although trading is really just selling and then immediately buying something else. I do very little selling.

4. Has the economy forced you to sell things you wouldn't have otherwise?
I haven't needed to sell any baseball cards to put food on the table, at least not yet.

5. What is your absolute favorite series, why?
Tie between T206 and 1933 Goudey. For post-war issues I think I like 1956 Topps best. Also 1966 Topps since it was the first set I collected as a kid.

6. How do you enjoy acquiring your cards most- Ebay, auction, BST, shows etc...?
Mostly eBay and major auction houses. I like to see scans of cards before I even consider bidding or making an offer.

7. What do you do for a living, how old are you and where do you live?
Semi-retired mathematician, 52, live near Boulder, Colorado.

1911-38 Zeenuts, PCL/NWL types, New England League Memorabilia, Pre-1950 Boston Red Sox

2.

T3 Jake Stahl, Boston
1910/1911 T212 Obak Walter McCredie
Zeenuts of several key players (Walter McCredie, Duffy Lewis, etc.)

3.

I usually buy, but will consider trades for items I need.

4.

Not really. Ive been able to hold onto cards much longer than in times past and Ive picked up a few cards that I might not have been able to acquire in a better economy.

5.

1911-38 Zeenuts. Besides being very interested in the history of the Pacific Coast League, there are tons of former Major Leaguers, HOFers, and stars throughout the series. The sheer volume of the series, as well as new discoveries and variations, will keep a collector going for many years.

6.

Ebay, BST.

7.

1. What is your focus today, in collecting? Working on the monster (I have almost 1/2 the set), but I've slowed down a bit lately because I've grown pickier about the condition of my cards. I also have 6 cards to complete the 1961 Topps set. This is the first set that I collected as a boy.

2. What are the 3 cards you need most? I don't need any cards, but I want to buy a T206 Cobb pretty soon. Chesbro and a trophy Chase are also on my want list.

3. Do you like to trade, buy, or a combination when you do acquire your needs? Buy. Trading is okay, but I'm not as experienced as other members of the board, and I don't like to feel like I'm being hustled. I've only traded cards a couple of times. I was real happy with my first trade, but very unhappy with the second. I guess I haven't had enough experience to really say if I would like to do more of it.

4. Has the economy forced you to sell things you wouldn't have otherwise? No. I only buy what I can afford. I buy and sell all the time on eBay and generate about $500.00 per month to add to my collection. It's a lot of work, but I enjoy it and it has worked out pretty good, so far.

5. What is your absolute favorite series, why? T206. The artwork and color. Also, it is available. I would hate to be chasing an impossible dream all the time. After I complete the T206 set, I will probably try my hand collecting one of the E sets.

6. How do you enjoy acquiring your cards most- Ebay, auction, BST, shows etc...? Ebay, because I like the feeling of getting a bargin, and every once in a while you can get a bargin there. The BST is nice. I've bought and sold on the forum, but its difficult to get a real value on the BST. If there is a deal posted it is gone before I get there.

7. What do you do for a living, how old are you and where do you live? I'm a high school English teacher. 57. Toledo, Ohio.

1. What is your focus today, in collecting?
I'm trying to finish The Monster. Apart from that, I'm working on '34 Goudeys and Diamond Stars. I'm also having fun reacquainting myself with Exhibits.

2. What are the 3 cards you need most?
Need? I don't need anything except my wife. Want is another matter. I'd really like to have a Wagner. I'd also like to be able to fly and turn rainwater into beer. Apart from Honus, maybe ... nah, there's nothing else on the list. I'm just playing anyway.

3. Do you like to trade, buy, or a combination when you do acquire your needs?
Trading is hard, because inevitably the guy who wants what I have doesn't have anything I want. I bid a lot on eBay, and this afternoon sold a card to another member of this board.

4. Has the economy forced you to sell things you wouldn't have otherwise?
Not yet.

5. What is your absolute favorite series, why?
Gotta be the '52 Topps. I finished the set about a year ago. The design and execution of that set will never be equalled.

6. How do you enjoy acquiring your cards most- Ebay, auction, BST, shows etc...?
I think I already answered tis in 3.

7. What do you do for a living, how old are you and where do you live? I'm a 67 year old fart who taught college physics forever. I live in Davidson, NC, home of Stephen Curry and a couple thousand others.
