i think the opposite about posada & rivera...posada's a .330+ switch hitter & better than average catcher and jaba or whatever his name is, will move right into rivera's spot...imo

I hope it is Mattingly. As a lifelong Yankees hater, I would love to see the Mattingly curse continue (no WS during his tenure as a player or coach). As one of Bill Simmons readers once wrote, "somewhere in the Bronx is a 6 year old child wondering if the Yankees will win a World Series in his lifetime". May the curse continue.

Torre's offer for 2008 was on the order of $30,000 PER GAME, a salary that exceeds that of the average player by more than 150%. He hasn't taken the highest-paid team (by a lot) in baseball to a World Series victory in seven seasons.

I firmly believe that the Yankees were being generous in their offer to Torre, and think they should have instead not offered him anything...looking to find a new way to make the organization actually win when it counts.

I say the team should self manage. If they need a pitching change, they take a quick vote to decide who comes in.

Barry, They offered him a cut in pay from $7.5 million to $5.0 million plus some bonus money for advancing in the playoffs. Joe said thanks, but no thanks.

I'd be surprised if they took a chance on Mattingly ... There are no doubt better experienced candidates out there ... What about Davey Johnson? He's managed the Mets to a championship, so New Yorks fans will accept him. And he's had success in Baltimore and Cincy as well ... I suspect Bobby Valentine's name will come up as well, but I think Johnson's a better manager ...

$5 million would still have made him the highest paid manager in baseball.

I guess after 12 years, it was time for him to leave, and time for the Yankees to make a change. Mattingly would be a good fit, but it may not be him.

incl Willie Randolph & Clint Hurdle.
Terry Francona gets $1.6 mill
Mike Scoscia $2 million
Tony LaRussa $2.8 mill
and Lou Piniella now leads the majors w/ $3.5 million.

$5 million as a base pay still ain't bad
w/ another million to make the playoffs
another mill to make the Championship series
and another mill to get to the World Series

Wow, I'm just hearing it here. I wanted Joe back, but the organization found a smart way to get rid of him. 5M is nothing to sneeze at, so Joe'd look bad if he scoffs too much.
I'd go for Girardi over Mattingly. Can't stand LaRussa. I'd keel over if they brought Buck back.

While I like Torre, $5 mil plus incentives is hardly a slap in the face. He quit because he had enough plain and simple.

Yanks would be insane to hire Mattingly who has never managed anything. Girardi, a recent NL Manager of the Year is ready, willing and able. Posada certainly comes back, Mo maybe -- after all, Jaba is ready for the job.

It would be a mistake for Mattingly to take the manager's job. So far he's the Yankee's "golden boy." Once Donnie became the manager he may quickly lose that status.

So he should pass up a job like Manager of the Yankees because he's afraid of failure? I guess sitting around being the "golden boy" really pays well and does wonders for one's self-esteem. Peter, do you think there is a professional athlete in existence that has such a fear of failure?

I'm pretty upset about this, but i thought this may happen. Torre was great for New York. I think he'd make a great commisioner, but only time will tell.

I really dont know who will get the nod.

Mattingly has or had the best shot, yet it's rumored that he said he wasn't ready yet.
Girardi is another option, although i don't think they'll go that route. Girardi and Steinbrenner(s) feuds may dwarf the old ones of Billy Martin and the Boss.
I personally don't like Larussa so i hope not.
Another name i haven't heard mentioned anywhere that is within the organization is Larry Bowa who has managerial experience. I don't know if he's a canidate though.

In the end i don't know ...With a gun to my head I'd have to pick Mattingly now...but I really don't know.

I hope they stay within the organization though. Maybe Paul O'neill as the new bench or hitting coach? I think he'd wake the bats up! ...not to mention a few gatorade jugs!

Sports talk folks around here in SW Missouri think LaRussa will probably remain with St. Louis for one more year. It will depend on who they hire for GM, but that's the scuttlebutt. Frankly, it would be a hoot to see "The Genius" spar with the NY media. LaRussa is about as surly as one can get after a tough loss.

Edited to add: A lot of Cardinal fans are hoping Torre comes to the Cards. I'm not one of them. St. Louis needs someone young and hungry to rebuild a horribly flat program.

LaRussa is such a genius he'll probably go back to batting his pitcher 8th again, even in the American League. God that guy is an overrated tool. Agree though, it would be fun to have him educate and enlighten the New York fans on how the game should be played. That would provide quite a few yuks (or yucks).

I wouldn't really call it fear of failure, it's simply that Donnie may want to preserve his status as "golden boy." Mattingly was pretty close to being a superstar in his day, and few superstars manage, the ones that do normally aren't that successful as managers.

Mattingly is ill-prepared for the job; I'd be shocked if it was even offered to him. Girardi is the most common-sensical choice.

Girardi would make some sense. It would be interesting to see the dynamic between the supposedly retiring Steinbrenner and a manager who basically told his last boss to STFU. In all events, I think Mattingly and Guidry are gone, maybe others too.

I would say Girardi with Mattingly a close second. I just can't see LaRussa dealing with the NY media and with Steinbrenner breathing down his neck although I think he would relish the challenge.

Al, fair point. Bobby V. is happy in Japan but no doubt he would come back to the Mets or Yankees -- and Steinbrenner supposedly is in love with the guy. Regardless of what happens, the Yankees need a kick in the ass. I'd rather see Bobby V than Mattingly, though.

I can't help but think that the Yankees are about ready for another edition of the Steve Kemp/Ken Phelps/Larry Milbourne years, so that whomever takes the Yankees job this year won't be around too long. I'd like to think that Mattingly is astute enough to bide his time and let the 2008 version of Stump/Bob Lemon take the heat.
