Default 1948 Leaf Paige Are there variations to the back?

Posted By: Jim

Does anyone know if there are variations to the back of the 1948 Leaf Satchel Paige card?
Misspelling "Kansat City"

I have the complete 1949 Leaf BB set and over the years I have seen about 8 cards of Paige
and the backs of all 8 cards were identical.

I am not aware of any variation....if that is what you are asking about. I did receive an email
about a Leaf Paige that was recently on Ebay. And, the back of that card has a minor flaw
(paper missing in the center of the back) in which the printing was missing. Is that the card
you are referring to ?

Dead center on the back of this card is a flaw, it appears that lettering is missing
due to a small paper scrape, or possible scratching of the cardboard, or very possibly
a glue stain that someone tried to remove. It's hard to tell from the scan.

But, what is clear is that in the 2nd line the "e-" is missing in the wording "gate-appeal".
The last "s" in "Kansas" is distorted and in the following line the "9" in 1948 is missing.
And, in the line just above Kansas there is a mark between the words "to match" that
shouldn't be there.

These 4 spots and in the line below them, there appears a discoloration in the gray
cardboard which leads me to believe that there was an attempt to "repair" the back
of this card; and, in the process the above stated lettering was affected.

Anyhow, I compared it with my Paige card and these are my observations. As I have said
before there is no known variation to the 1949 Leaf Paige card. Every one I have seen
has the same lettering on the back of the card.

I will provide you a scan of my Paige for you to compare on my next post.

Am I hearing you say that this card appears to be a reproduction?
Thank you for your input and expertise!

If you havent paid yet.... Id ask the seller what the top of the slab says. The auction has a few red flags.

Cropping off the top of the PSA slab (hidding the real grade), strange back problems (messed up printing plate variation?/surface damaged/restored?), Low BIN price., etc.

To me the card looks authentic. If it is a fake its the best Ive seen.

The seller states that the card hasn't been graded. Appears to be a PSA holder?
I held off on payment as they haven't provided a full scan.
I really want a Paige Leaf but am so hesitant..
Any suggestions?

Also on the second to last line the d in should is also obscured.I would be very careful about sending money with all the potential red flags that have been pointed out.

You did the right thing IMO by not paying. Its obviously in a PSA slab and if seller says "not graded".......run!
