Anybody noticing? Tell your MJ story, etc
The recent run up in $$$$$ on all things hoops? First Kobe insanity, now MJ making Kobe craziness look "tame" if that is possible. All the while LeBron thru the roof as well. Where does it end?
MJ RC's on 5/1: PSA 8 = $7K (I sold 3 diff 8's circa 2013-4 for about $800 ea.) PSA 9 - $12K (I paid $1600 for a 9 about that same time) PSA 10 = $50,000.00 !!!!!! (I tried to get a 10 in 2009 from BBCE and it was just out of my reach and went for $5100. Basically 10X in 10 years. What an investment. |

Single best card I ever bought. I have a psa 8 oc that I paid like 800 for. I should’ve paid up for a straight 8 or 9 but was too cheap but at least I get to go along for the ride.

I had a BGS 8 and 9 that I sold during the last run up and bought a BGS 9.5 for 8k when they settled down. Now I see 9.5s are selling from 22k to 34k. I am curious if they can hold their price this time.

it is a wild ride, and not just those guys. Prices are jumping on a variety of HOF RCs and desirable cards. What amazes me is the run-up on parallel cards from the late 1990s that are not all that limited, like Fleer Ultra Gold Medallion. The MJs have about tripled in the last few months. it isn't the big bux of the RCs but it is a startling jump. The really limited cards, like the Players Private Issue from 1996 Topps Gallery, have moved into four figures.

There are so many different theories that have been posted online, such as the ESPN documentary on Jordan, market manipulation, sneaker-heads entering the market, bitcoin guys entering the market, etc. However, nobody really knows the answer. Anyhow, I did sell my Jordans and I used the money to pay off my credit cards, so I'm pretty happy.
By the way, did you guys notice that vintage basketball is still pretty much the same price-wise? We are not seeing Bill Russell rookies selling for $8,000 US, right? |

The Jordan RC is like the 1952 Topps Mantle. It doesn’t matter that there are rarer cards or other players as good or better with rookie cards. The demand for those 2 cards dwarves all of their contemporaries. .

That's a very good explanation for the 1986 Fleer price rise (I won't call it a RC since there was a licensed card the year before, just like the Mantle), but does not explain why prices are surging on other early Jordans and slightly later Jordan inserts, Pippen and Rodman RCs, and a host of other basketball rookies and inserts. I don't have a Fleer card and I've watched all of my other Jordan cards rise. If this keeps up much longer and at the same rate I will probably take some profits.

In 2019 I decided I wanted to buy some of the Jordans that I couldn't afford as a kid (started collecting around 1988). Picked up the 86 Fleer in a PSA 8.5, the 87 in a PSA 9, the 88 in a PSA 9 (I still have the one I pulled from a pack as a kid but it's a 7 at best), and the 89 in a PSA 9, all for pretty reasonable prices.
After the Last Dance, they've all more than doubled in price compared to what I paid. I'm not likely going to sell these, as I just wanted to own them, but I'm happy to see that the demand has gone up. |

I ended up selling off one of my Star cards; double the price in a less than a year. Wish I could do that with my IRA.

What was in the water at PSA this day...?
I was fortunate to decide to buy MJ's early Fleer issues a couple of years ago in PSA 8 or so. Not the stratosphere, but solid.
Ended up obsessing over finding a well-centered copy of his '86 RC, and could not find one in an 8. So I got a nice PSA 7 for $923 offer on eBay in late 2015. I thought it might have the juice to go higher, so I finally convinced myself to send it to PSA for a Review in holder, with minimum 7.5. I thought there was maybe a 10% chance of them bumping it. Imagine my surprise when PSA was feeling all sorts of crazy that day it graded and took it to a PSA 8! (see pics) Mind you, this was submitted in the holder. Never heard of such generosity before then or since. I am still amazed. Other good fortune with MJ, I bought a PSA 8.5 of the Fleer Sticker for under $400 in 2018, because I couldn't find a centered 8. B_86001b.JPGB_86001.jpg Also had recent success with this Gold Refractor I happened into coming back a PSA 10 after sitting on it for 5 years -- sold last month at the peak. It'll all fund Vintage baseball, as it should!! Q_IMG_706 - Copy - Copy.jpg
